alright
right now i have the presonus blue tube
(got some real good recordings from)
i make rap music and have been using a software compressor
but now i'd like to buy me a hardware compressor
been looking at the dbx hard,,,,becuase of the price.
but i'm willing to go higher for a really good one(for the money).
so iv'e narrowed it down to the rnc and the joe meek 3q,,the rnc sounds like the winner,,but i hardly beleave what i hear.
these are two popular brands that iv'e been looking at for awhile and i know someone has one or both of these,, or have used them,,,if yawl have any info on either would be cool,,cuz they are both listed at $175 shipped

or any other brands i should check out

The RNC is a great little compressor...one of the better values out there for sure. At close to that price you should also check out ART's Pro VLA...totally different flavor than the RNC but just as amazing.

Weez

Well.
I have both the 3Q and the Rnc.

The 3Q is a mic pre / compressor / EQ That is extremely colored in its sound to me, plus it is not extremely quiet, but reasonably so. The compressor is an Optical based one.
I actually find the 3Q more suited for Bass guitar and micing Guitar Cabinets rather than voice... but to each his own!

The RNC is a Single source Stereo compressor that is very clean and transparent when set up right, and is very well suited for vocals in my opinion particularly in the super nice mode.
Obviously you would have to use your existing mic pre or get another.

I also have the VLA ( 3 actually) and it is a nice Compressor as well, certainly more versatile than the 3Q (in my opinion) but I prefer them on percussive tracks like drums,Guitar tracks, and maybe screamo vocals.

My take obviously.

Besides the power transformer going out on me after about 50 hours of use, my Pro VLA sounds great and is REALLY effective. Still haven't tried the newer line of joemeek, but I stand solidly behind the older ones and use them in my chain. Never tried the RNC, but have only read good things about it, never bad. That, and the RNP. But if you are looking for something to run your mic into, you would want more of a "channel strip" box like the 3Q, perhaps rather than a compressor alone, the latter which is usually inserting into the mix. The difference is that you can plug your mic directly into something like the 3Q and the RNP (RNP is preamp only, I believe, no compression...someone correct me if I'm wrong). The "all-in-one" boxes where you get a decent little preamp and compression and sometimes EQ, a "tracking box", are more like the 3Q. I still love joemeek products and use them, and for an all-in-one tracking box, if that is what you're looking for, I would guess the 3Q would suit rap vocals best. You are probably want to use the box to even out the vocals, as rap usually has a lot of extreme decibel levels, from quiet to loud within a second or two, on the way in, as well as the preamp and a little EQ as a tool if you need it going in(most people EQ in the mix, but sometimes I'll cut frequencies going in if they are extremely out of whack). I'm not an expert, but the 3Q would get my vote here for a one box does all budget.

cool

right now i'm having a transaction prob,,,but for the most part the RNC is on the way,,,thanx alot for yawls help,,and look out for me to be posting some mixtape and original material in the hip hop forums soon.

thanx
