I'm considering the RNP preamp by FMR Audio. HAs anyone had experience with FMR's products, or specifically their RNP preamp, or their RNC compressor? You guys are the pros!

RNP sells for $475
RNC sells for $175

There are lots of people around here that use FMR stuff. You'll find an overwhelmingly positive response to them.
I have an RNP and I would recommend it highly.

You simply cannot go wrong with their stuff. I have 2 RNC's, an RNLA, and an RNP.

They aren't magic bullet, do everything, swiss army knife, one box fits all devices, but they are about as close to it as you can get in this price range.

The very clean RNC doesn't do agressive overcompression and has trouble with bass. That's why they made the RNLA- its does agressive very well. The RNP is very sweet, slightly larger than life and really clean.

My only complaints about the RNC and RNLA are the wall wart power supplies and the lack of dual mono operation. Big deal- at that price I can just buy more units if I need more channels.

Take care,
Chris

I've got a pair of RNC's and from my experience I haven't found anything that can beat em for the price. I paid less than 120 (each) used for both, and they're making me want an RNP and RNLA or two...

I've got two RNCs and an RNLA. The RNC in supernice mode is pretty phenomenal for transparent compression. The RNLA works well also, and has a totally different sound - an odd combination of thick tone with bright transients, at least for what I do with it on guitar. I use very gentle settings with each, rarely more than 2-3 dB of gain reduction.

RNP makes gear that is very good quality for the money. Their products are well built, but are not high end audio gear. They are essentially the first step up from entry level pres and comps. I have one RNP and 2 RNCs, and even though I now have better pres and compressors, they are still very useful and continue to get used. They are not a panacea for all audio problems and situations -- for example, the RNC while being a very good transparent compressor - particularly for vocals, isn't great on bass or where you might want compression as an effect. It isn't a Distressor. But in their price class, they provide extremely good value IMHO.

Keep in mind, particularly with mic preamps, the difference in sound as you get better equipment is incremental and not as marked as some (including the manufacturers and their marketing) might have you believe. The differences in sound from even an inexpensive pre to a "good" pre can be subtle and can be affected by the kind of microphone used and the rest of the signal chain. Sometimes the difference is more a matter of "flavor" than a night and day "improvement." In general, you can generate a substantially greater difference in sound through mic selection and placement than by replacing a $200 preamp with a $500 preamp, or even a $1000 preamp.
