I have (well, my dad has) a Yamaha guitar with a shit tailpiece in it. It's one of those tremolos with the fine tuners in it, but it doesn't work very well. It goes out of tune very easily. So I'm looking at picking up a used Floyd Rose tailpiece as a replacement. I see that they're going on ebay for pretty cheap. My question is: does anybody know whether the actual Floyd Rose models are that much better than the 'licensed' Floyd Rose models? I want to do this right.

Hmmm?

I haven't met one I liked yet. Have not tried them all either though.

Do you really use the whamy? If not you could block it with a rubber block or somthing, and tighten up the springs.

I used a screw and a rubber vacume cap to block up an Ibenez I had. Worked great! It always came back to zero, I could still dive, and come about a half step up. Plus it was adjustable. I just put the screw into the body in front of the block that the spring hook to. You can get the rubber vacume cap at any auto parts store.

Good luck

Some of the Floyd copys are crap, but not all of them. I've got an old Krammer Barretta with a Floyd that kicks ass. But, the way it's put together makes it a real pain to set the intonation and you have to cut the little balls off the end of the strings before you can install them. I've seen some newer Floyds that were better about that stuff though.

I'd say that if you want the best wammy you can get, then get the Floyd and have a pro install it for you. I really like doing my own work on my guitars, but I'd NEVER drill holes in the neck to install a locknut. Leave that stuff to a pro!

I had a "pro" install a Floyd Rose at my local music shop and he did such a crap job of it I had to remove and re-do it myself.

My point - pick your pro wisely.

Actually, I won't have to drill anything--there is already a locking nut/bridge assembly in the guitar. It's just a piece of crap. So that's why I'm going to replace it. It looks like it's going to be cake to install.

It sounds like you have a floyd rose 2 style trem, the kind you don't cut the balls off (ouch!) the strings, they don't hold the tune because the tension at the balls is always changing, even a cheap copy of a floyd rose double locking would be much better, and you have the added benefit of being able to break a string a couple of times before replacing it.

If that's what you have on it you can just drop a floyd rose in it without making any modifications.

here's a warning about the new Fender made Floyd Rose Deluxe model (not the standard), it's designed in a way that you do have to take wood out the guitar to install it. That really pised me off when I bought one, they didn't mention that on their website.

The ibanez low pro edge is great... ones set, it stays in tune, till your strings are worn out.. if you like floyd that is...

I wound up getting a licensed Floyd Rose from a Fender Strat that somebody was selling on Ebay. I figured it was cheap enough that I could afford the risk. The pictures tell me it has the same general shape as the one that's already on the guitar, so installing it should take only a few minutes. Torpid-x, you're right--the tremolo on the guitar at the moment does not require the balls to be castrated from the strings. Let's hope the new trem works better.

JUST FOOD FOR THOUGHT.......

instead of putting the rose nutpiece on, you could order a "behind the nut" locking piece from Kahler.......

i've used them exclusively since 1982, and have never had a problem.......... works great, 4 little screws, leave your nut as is......

no drilling......

cheap too.

Personaly I'd go for better tuners

Another option rather than putting any locking nut on the neck is get some better tuners. Just my opinion:). I think carvin makes some nice ones. PRS may sell theirs seperate to. There are lots of good ones out there. I think Grover makes locking tuners that do not require a special nut.

Just something to think about.

The tuners are very crap-tastic, that's true. However, there's already a locking nut on there. It'd be silly not to use it.

Yes true

Does the new tremelo have fine tuners? YOu pretty much have to have them with a locking nut.

F.S.

Oh yeah, it's got fine tuners. I haven't gotten it in the mail yet, but I've seen the pictures. It's just your standard Floyd Rose type tremolo.
