After my drum hits the floortom, it has this hum, vibration, buzz that really resonates. Is it out of tune. I am not a drummer, so I am not sure what to do.

could be out of tune. some people actually use o-rings on floor toms to have a dry tom sound.

it's really hard to figure out what's going on based on your description....

a buzz or vibration can come from many things....including loose lugs or stands, etc....

however, a drum with resonant/batter heads in tune with one another will resonante (on one note)....which would indicate the drum being IN TUNE, not out of tune...now, if it's resonating and the resonant pitch is changing (going down, for example), than the two heads are out of tune with one another.

a problem that I've run across recording my kit (yamaha beech custom) is that my 16 floor tom, when in tune, resonates too much - and, when close mic'ing, presents a problem as the resonance builds up and muddies up the drum sound....to alleviate this, I either detune one of the resonant side lugs a hair or tape a small piece of toilet paper on the resonant head to control that out-of-control resonance....

Thanks guys, I used weather stripping and stuck in to the heads and gave it a great attack.

Excellent timing with this post. I've been having a similar problem. When I hit my kick my toms resonate, but I'm not sure if I want to get rid of it yet though because its almost adding a nice boom to the kick sound. Go figure.

Yeah, if you want your drums to sound like cardboard boxes, put all kinds of muffling crap in them and they won't resonate with your kick. If you want them to sound like drums, better leave the muffling out.

Hold on there attack cat, that resonance can do nasty stuff to a drum take. My 14" tom was causing all kinds of havoc until I worked it out by mounting it with a RIMS mount. I agree about not muffling the hell outta stuff, though.

MEOW! :D

Yeah, I suppose that would be a great solution. I'd like to get RIMS on my kit one of these days. I've never had a big problem with sympathetic resonance, though. I can hear the toms hum a bit when I hit the kick in the room, but not on recordings.
