is there a gadget that can switch between two pairs of audio monitors? i only have one stereo out and i want to be able to flip between two different monitors. thanks.

The Radio Shack unit gets my vote - I've also used mine for years - never had a probelm.

I found this unit too

But I want to upgrade to a lower gauge wire, this thing doesn't accept anything thicker than 16 gauge from what I could see. Is there another one that can? Can I modify it?

My engineer uses 10 gauge

I wouldn't recommend it. I use mine to split the signal before it's amplified (one to the amp, one to a set of active monitors).

I don't think they're designed to handle a severe amount of power. How much power are you sending to it that you need less than 16 gauge?

I think it's 250watts or 350watts per channel

...then you definitely don't want this speaker switch. In fact, I'm not quite sure you'd want to use a speaker switch with that much juice - you might risk screwing up your speakers.

The best (or at least safest) way (IMO) would be to get a separate amp for the other set of monitors, and use the switch select the amp(s) that gets the signal.

...probably not the answer you're looking for, but it's the only safe way I know of, unless you can select speaker outputs within the amp itself (which most don't).

I knew I'd seen a good pro quality speaker switch somewhere, so I looked it up (in a Sweetwater catalogue). They're made by ProCo, and I found two models, both under $300US. I'm getting one as soon as I upgrade! Hope this helps.

Actually

I realixed I do have another amp, it's kinda old so I won't use it for my monitors, but for my older JBLs. I found out yesterday that my current amp is only one channel.

I run two complete setups: Recorder to reference amp to Event 20/20's/ and a Harmon Kardon Stereo amp driving three sets of speakers - Klipsch, Fisher/and a pair of little Radio Shack Optimus 7's. The Optimus 7's were purchased at the recommendation of John Leventhal in an article I read. I'm just a rank amateur, so I need all the help I can get!:D

Do you use the speaker switch with your second amp and the three speakers?

Being that My main amp only has one (real) channel and my old one only has two outs, should I use the speaker switch with my old amp and my JBLs and regular stereo speakers?

"Do you use the speaker switch with your second amp and the three speakers?"

Yes. And I'll let you in on a secret. I bought the Harmon Kardon (very sweet comsumer stereo amp), the Klipsch's, and the Fisher's and the speaker switches at GARAGE SALES! I don't know where you live in NC (I Love that state!), but check out your local garage and estate sales - you'd be surprised what you can find. I've bought amps, guitars, speakers, mics at these things, all for $.05 on the dollar! It's a good way to build a studio on a shoestring budget.

"should I use the speaker switch with my old amp and my JBLs and regular stereo speakers?"

Yes. Just make sure you run the switch off of the Main (usually "A") front speaker leads on the amp. The "B" or "rear" leads often have less power the the "A's". You can get the little Radio Shack switches for around $25.

I am a garage sale JUNKIE :D

I've found some amazing, amazing deals on stuff. I'm still amassing the coolest collection of old, weird mics. The "junk" speakers I use I got from a garage sale too (along with the reciever for 20 bucks). They're good to have for reference.

What kind of mics?

Good for recording vocals?
What do they sound like?

StoneB - another thing - take your wife/girlfriend with you. She just may become addicted too, and it's a great way to spend a Saturday morning. You will definitely see some interesting people!

Wish I had a wife, between girlfriends

But I'll take the closest thing (friend that happens to be a woman)
