I have an Aiwai shelf stereo system. It has a great EQ that I can "flatten" at different levels. Would this work as monitors, has anyone done this before? Thanks!

Been there....
Done that....
It doesn't work. :(
If it did, there would be no need to have monitors in the first place, right?
When you do a mix on a consumer-grade stereo system (flat or not), you'll never get a true reproduction of what's coming out of your recording unit... it ain't gonna happen, dude.
What you end up having to do is to run back and forth between your home stereo, your car stereo, and your boom-box... and trying to achieve a "decent" sound on all 3 sources.
This method is very time consuming and frustrating as hell.
There's no easy way around it... cough up the $$$ for real monitors, or tear your hair out.
It's up to you.
