Hello everyone. I'm back. After 6 weeks of fixing my old house, and jumping in the car 3 hours after escrow closed, and 7 weeks of driving around Oregon, I'm finally able to get on a computer and log on. WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEW!!!!! What a learning experience.
Oregon, at least the western half is beautiful(thats all we looked at). Lots of different areas, weather, and environments. But I have finally bought a home. After making offers on 11 situations, and every one of them falling through for one reason or other, we finally were able to get financing on one in Coos Bay.
Hey Knightfly, Scio is a neat little town. Tried to buy 2 houses in Jefferson, side by side, right on the river next to the train bridge. But the owner was a flake and wasted a bunch of our time and money, so we gave up. Almost bought a big Masons hall in some little town between Beaverton and Astoria, but it was WAAAAAAY too remote.
But once we went through the whole hiway 5 corridor, we decided to go over to Coos Bay and look. Well, its pretty depressed over there, but we don't care. Most of our income is derived elsewhere. And the weather, well. You have to like the rain. In our case, we do. The day I left Sacramento, it was 105 degrees. I've been in Coos Bay for a month, and every day has been a beautifull 71 degrees. I drove back to Sacramento yesterday to gather a load of tools to prepare the new place for winter. It was 106 and today is 108 degrees, so I can't wait to get out of this hellhole. Traffic, dust, and, oh yes. Theives. Got a bill from my attorney today. They should be declared open season targets.
Well, the property in Coos is TOOOOO cool. Drive straight up a hill into the driveway, and look out on 50 miles of Oregon mountains, even though the house is 1/4 mile off of hiway 101. And the house is HUGE. Got a shop too. And of course. the studio. Its a seperate building, or should I say roof on poles. Ha! I get to enclose a building anyway I want. NO NEIGHBORS on three sides and only one 75 feet below and on the other side of the house. YEA!!! But there is one small problem. Who ever built the pole barn didn't brace the poles. The roof is trussed 2x4 with an extention on one end. I have to structurally brace it next week temporarily with cross braced cables and turnbuckles or something, cause its starting to lean. One big wind load, and its collapse city. Its 24 x 42 and eventually will be bigger. Hopefully by next year. That is if I don't kill my self doing it. Ha!
So much for the update. I leave monday to go back, and hook up my computer and tools etc. I'm on my sister in laws computer in Sac at the moment.
Talk to you all soon, and Knightfly, I'll be in touch. I need a lot of input, and hopefully you all can enlighten me with some other options on this. I'll post some pics as soon as I can, to show you what I'm up against(a lot!!). But it'll definitely be interesting. Till then.
Cheers

I have relatives in Tillamook and Im going to spend 5 days at Cape Lookout for my August Vacation. Oregon is a nice place. Don't forget to pop sonusdude a mail.

Hi SofMm, thanks for the reply. I will do that as soon as I'm up and running. I wasn't sure if anyone would remember who I am. Its been a long time since I've been on the net. Wow, tv in a motel gets old. Did a lot of library reading and walking around Northbend. They had their 100 yr aniversary the other day, and I saw the parade. All of 12 cars and a womans kazoo band. Hahahaha! Talk about going back in time. But its very interesting there, and I can't wait to become one of the towns people(Northbend is right next to Coos Bay.)

Lots of lumber, ply, and MDF mills and lots of hardwoods around there. Right up my alley. Expecially driftwood. My studio will be build out of collected stuff. Rocks, masonry., logs, driftwood etc. I used to have a business called environmental woodcraft, where I built everything from abandoned wood. I love it. Ever see a book called woodbutchers? I found an old copy in one of the bookstores there. Too cool. Homes made from collected stuff. Bottles, concrete, wood- you name it. My house is modern, but there is a creek beside my house, with a path that leads into Jurasic park.
Ha! Looks just like it. Man, I didn't know there were areas like that left on earth. Especially a mile from a town. Let alone in my backyard. 200 ft fir trees- 6 ft ferns, moss on everthing and DARK- REAL dark. Havn't walked in there at night yet. Maybe after I buy a pistol. I'm going to build a woodbutchers shack over the creek about 25' up, on two fallen logs. Maybe part of my studio. Talk about ambiance. I can see it now. I'll post some pics and plans soon. Well thanks again SoMm. I've got some other questions later. I'm planning on a few studio item purchases too.
But I can't make up my mind if I should buy a large analog board or make the dive into say a DB8 or similar digital setup. I'm still not that adept at the digital stuff. Or the analog for that matter. Ha! Well, thanks again.

Hey, turkey - you were in Scio? How could ya tell? Musta not blinked for the 3 seconds it takes to drive thru... :=) (I actually live about 7 miles away, to the south-east)

Coos Bay is cool if you don't need a job, sounds like you got a start on a sweet setup. When you get back in WWW land, check out John's new site here - better graphics capability than any site I've seen, Barefoot's modding the speaker forum and I'm doing the construction one -

http://www.homer.com.au/phpBB2/index.php

Want a quick first tip? Bulldoze the "roof on sticks" and start from scratch - once you get a real studio going, glue crappy old broken trees and rocks to the outside to make it look "artsy"; otherwise, you'll get tired of recording lots of storm noise and babbling brook stuff whether you want it or not...

Looking forward to the return of our "blabber-fests"; also, it looks like I'm kinda headed toward being John's "US rep", sorta... Steve

Well for cryin out loud. Ha! Howdy howdy howdy guys!! The old fart wasn't dead after all huh! Thanks for the welcome. Thought I'd just drop a line, while I was here to see if you all are still kickin. Glad to hear from ya. Well, I'm still kickin, which is a wonder after dealing with all the real estate agent and loan broker bullshit. Loan brokers- ha, what a joke. I made a couple of them pretty miserable- I called them on their crap and lies, in front of thier boss's and other clients. Don't think they will be in that field for long.

Well thanks for the tip Knightfly. Actually, I don't know exactly how or what I'm doin yet in regards to the studio. I made out really good on the house but the government took a lot, and I don't really know what all I'm going to have to do to the new house to prepare for the winter. It's got a lot of work to be done, which translates to $. Soooooo, we'll see. Anyway, I'm lookin forward to bein there and getting back in here to MAKE SOME WAVES!!! Ha. Mostly from my belly flops!

Fitz,

Just to let you know how much your presence was missed, when Frederic showed back up we had a nice little "what happened to Fitz" thread going.

Glad to see you're on the move and it sounds like a great place to make a new start.

Howdy everyone. Back again. First off, I want to thank everyone for making me feel like one of the gang! Well, I had to register with a different name on my son in laws computer, in order to post today cause I'm in Lake Tahoe. Drove up here today. Its beautiful here today. I'm listening to an outdoor concert as I type this. Can't tell who it is but one of the Casino's is putting on. Every night theres a major act in the summer. One of the marquis(never spelled that word before:)said Bob Dylan is playing tonight.
Lots of action here, if you like to hit the casino's. I played here numerous times in the 70's.

Hmmmm, I have to say, I missed this place. I shut down my computer in the old house when I tore the studio down. Holy Moly. I pulled about 300 squareheads, bolts, wires etc, not to mention the equipment. Wheeeeeeeeeeeew! Packed the MSR's to take to the Tech in Sac to calibrate the machines before I take them to Coos Bay. The mixer also is being fixed, and what ever it needs. It will be studio "B's mixer. Hahahahaha! Okok, I know.
Other than to say thanks, I really didn't have anything to post other than progress.
Today, I secured the help of my son-in-law(David) to help load, drive, unload, and clean up the property. The last owners were "pro" yardsellers and left a TON of shit on the property. David is a videographer and computer nut. He and I, and my son, will be building a multipurpose type studio. You have to have a lot of irons in the fire to survive on the coast. Ours are varied. Printing, bindery, drafting and graphics, building and woodworking(crafts too!), and hopefully some studio and video work. And good ole Ebay among others. And somewhere in there, I am going to throw music in. I intend on forming a little band(OLD FART and Smellers. Ha! Tomorrow, I leave for Sacramento again to reserve the truck and trailers and load up for the FIRST convoy. Hahahahahah!
I just purchased my woodworking machinery. And a bunch of special materials from the local venders that would take me time
to get from Coos Bay. When I get there, I'll purchase the roofing and engineered joists for the shop. Lord knows what lies ahead. Well. thats the news from lake wobegon. Tomorrow, the journey continues. Thanks again mates.

p.s. Yea John, theres TONS of oysters there. Right out in Charlston harbor. My treat if you ever come to Coos Bay. Ha!! We'll go to the Lil Grand Ole Opry on Sat night. And the underground blues bar and pickup on some local blues/rock/country. Thats in Northbend. All of six blocks of it. Interesting place. OLD lumbermill town. The indian casino is down the street. We'll check the jazz there. Nice trio. Piano, bass and drums. Orrrrrrrrrr, we can go see the Northbend Womans auxilary marching Kazoo band! What a blast! Hey now THERE's SOME recording potential. We'll run em through a fuzztone and reamp it through a marshal.Mic it direct to HD. Then we'll smash it to smitherines with digital overdrive compression and then..............opps, sorry bout that Heheheheheheheh! .zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz :( :)

I intend on forming a little band(OLD FART and Smellers

hahahah - I was in a band called "Lost Youth" with a heap of old farts!! we were a popular band :):)
I adore oysters - last week I drove back from Sydney and pulled in at Karuah where I bought 6 doz in shells. Ate oysters for days ;):)

Sounds like you are on a new trip mate - good luck with it :)

cheers
