I have a Fishman Rare Earth soundhole pickup (the humbucking one) on my acoustic. It does a decent job at replicating the sound of the guitar, but it has one distict problem: the sound level is distictly lower on my unwound strings than it is on my wound strings.

Is this common for soundhole pickups? Is there any way around this?

This used to be very common, but it should not be with the Rare Earth. A couple of things you could try. Leo Kotke used to supper glue a piece of paper clip right under the unwound strings, which helps. The other thing you might want to consider is the strings you are using. The GHS White Bronze are popular for use with magentic pickups, and would probably help.
