THREE NOTE ODYSSEY

This track is about ten minutes long and represents, I think, about the best sound I've ever gotten out of my Portastudio. Equipment used includes:

Tascam 424 mkII
Yamaha YS200 synth
Lotus strat copy
DOD Stereo Flanger
homemade Fuzz Face clone
EH Small Stone
Danelectro Dan-Echo
precision bass copy
5-piece drum kit, not sure of brand
CAD E1000 mic

mixed down into Mac beige G3/OS8.6 using Coaster and SoundSculptor

Please let me know what you think.

cheers

Billy S.

Very cool. Reminds me of some Pink Floyd stuff. Some cool, spacey sounds in there.

Good Job.

Good Job...

for the equipment you are using.

The only thing I don't like about it is that it brings back bad memories of this stuff this guy I worked with always let me hear..It was 4-track stuff and ALL of his stuff was 3 note keyboard oddessys..ugh..But hahaha..that's my own personal problem.

I bet that you have more than 3 notes to work with and You obviously have more talent than him and it sounds like with some better tools you could put together some interesting pieces...

Definitely Floydish for sure.

Good job.

I would change the guitar sound. Your levels arent the best. you need to boost the drums. But it does sound alright for a portastudio effort.

What The Hell Is A 3 Note Keyboard Oddysey?

I've Heard Of A Arp Oddysey, Does That Mean That The Oddysey Has 3 Notes Of Polyphony?

Actually, I think the ARP Odyssey was TWO note polyphonic.

That's actually a pretty good in-joke, now that I think about it. :) Ah, the wonders of song titles....

why would you record on a 4tk when u have a mac?

some highs missing, but not bad. drums not loud enough, gitar too loud in mix. Too much playing, needs more space. Nice mood. inspired by Dark Side?

is 3 note odyssey the name of the song? What does this mean? Does he mean that his friend made a lot of songs that sounded like your song 3 note odyssey???????????????????????

I'm assuming he means that the songs consisted of only 3 notes, or he was only playing 3 notes at any given time.

Too old, no real multitrack software. Besides, I've always been partial to tape and analog in general. Good news is, I'm finally gonna start concentrating on computer-based recording instead of tape. Bad news is, I'm building a PC to do it. :P

Part of the problem with the drums is that they're premixed with the bass on one track, although I probably could have boosted the whole bass/drums track and brought down the apparent level of the bass through EQ. I admit I tend to go overboard when playing drums, but I'm into ride cymbals, you know. (Incidentally, I recorded the drums with just one mic.)

It probably could use some more thoughtful arrangement, but I kinda did this one off the cuff.

I'm afraid I don't know who Dark Side are...doh. I should know these things.

hee hee...listen, all I was saying was I had this guy I worked with...and ALL his songs consisted of 3 note amotspheric keyboard lines...when I (saw the title) and heard Moogboys song begin...It just brought back bad memories....It was a weak attempt at comedy..lol!! Anyway the point is MB's tune has a lot more going on and I like! Now let's get back to commenting on his song and not my STUPID comments!

Rock on!

No, my fault, I was being lazy, Dark Side of the Moon, Floydish.

Even w/ one mic on drums, you can get a decent sound, look w/ your ears for the sweet spot - says Geoff Emeric - or instead of sweet, maybe in my room, least sucky spot.

I like it. It has a great sound for being a portastudio recording. I especially like the drums. I really like the understated, almost muted sound of the drums. it reminds me of some flaming lips stuff. very cool. At times the guitar seems a little bit loud, but other than that I think it is great.

I'd really like to hear this song but so far I have not been able to get ANYTHING on soundclick to work and it won't let me download without being a member. Is there someplace else I can get it?

pretty cool stuff, nice use of effects, built up a cool vibe.

Right now, no, unfortunately. Perhaps I'll try something else.

I kind of just stuck the mic about a foot or two above the toms, pointing down at a slight angle, if I remember correctly. I guess I got unusually lucky this time, although usually this produces a decent sound. I also muted the snare with a paper towel.

The kit was set up in my living room, which was serving as my band's practice space (unfortunately the band had to move out because someone complained about the noise, so now I don't have a drum kit at my disposal anymore :( ); the room is small but it has a high cathedral ceiling that also leads to a storage space on the second floor. All the rooms are connected, so there's a lot of contigious space for the sound to go to. Basically it's a great sounding room for recording, the acoustics are just terrific for a home space. Too bad it's gonna revert back to a regualr old living room here in a bit...
