I'm looking forward on buying my first pair of
studio monitors
How would you people rate the
Edirol MA10D Powered Digital Desktop Monitors?

It doesn't matter - we're not the ones listening to them... how do YOUR ears rate them?

I was afraid you might say that.
Man, that's why it sucks buying online sometimes.
Thanks

Fes, if you haven't already done so, try a search for *reviews* on Google and at this forum (use the search icon at top). You'll find comments related to the Edirols, which I haven't heard, as well as comments on a variety of other budget monitors (under $300).

About buying online, remember that you can always order a couple brands (your final contenders) and then return your least favorite. No one really wants to do this, of course, but many of us do simply because we need to hear a product in our own home studio before deciding. I do it all the time, but I always buy one, in the end, from that online store, just to be sure I don't waste their time and money in the end.

Good luck,

J.

Thanks J.
This is harder than buying computer monitors.

Why do I have to listen to the Studio Monitors before I buy them...really?
Can anyone explain?

Because your ears have to like them -- monitor choice is very subjective, and not everyone hears exactly the same way....

It's kind of like putting salt on your food before you taste it....

Let me put it this way:

What if someone came in here and said "What does everybody think of rock music?"

Different people have different opinions. Some may LOVE rock, others may like parts, but not all, and some will flat out hate rock.

But no matter how many people tell you it kicks ass, you won't like it unless you like it. If you love it, a thousand people telling you it sucks won't matter.

If 1000 people tell you a pair of monitors rule, it won't matter unless YOU like them.

Good question, Fes. To put it another way... I sampled various monitors with my favorite (well recorded) CDs to find monitors that I thought accurately presented MY choice of music via MY ears. Why is this important? Think about it, Fes. When I'm mixing my own tunes through my monitors, I'm shooting for the same balance of sound that my favorite music gives--through the very same monitors. Flat response is important--so that no frequency range jumps out at you--as most folks here will agree, but I like to use monitors whose sound with pro CDs gives me the target to hit with my own non-pro music. It works for me although there's plenty of room here for what standards respresent a good monitor for different people.

Tip: make sure you choose some pro CDs that you believe are recorded well and that you know extremely well through different stereo systems. Check out "Home Recording for Dummies" (at most big bookstores) for a basic list of such CDs if you need help.

Best,
J.

Probably for the same reasons you might want to date a girl before you marry her . . . or tour a house before you buy it . . . or smell your underwear before you put 'em on.

You ever been set up on a blind date with an ugly girl before, Fespenis?

Fostex PM-1 powered monitors sound great and are only $349 a pair. I also like Alesis monitors, they're the ones I use but I use the passive ones and a separate Alesis amp.

As a matter of fact

As a matter of fact, I have been set up on blind dates, chesscock.
It wasn't a pretty picture. I like those Alesis One MKII, since almost everything I own is Alesis.
But now I know, thanks for the help, guys.
