Hi y'all,

this is my first post on this mixing clinic.. Been reading/learning alot on this board. this is just a quick and dirty cover of Richie Beirach's beautiful song 'Elm', played on bass. 'tWas just to wear new strings a bit, try some weird chords and did it all in under 1.5

can be found here

Any comments ?
I know strings rattle, and some chords sound too close, but decent chord spacing is kinda difficult on a bass guitar.

Recorded using a bass, a computer and speakers :D

welcome deadpoet. i liked it. very good tone. very little noise imo.

Interesting piece of music. I liked the tone on the bass that played the melody part. The chord thing on the bass was a nice way to do it. I would have probably gone for a little fuller sound on that - but it probably would have ended up sounding muddy. :D

I thought I noticed a timing glitch or two - maybe that's how it's intended to be played, I don't know. You could also probably punch out the string/fret rattle. Tought I heard a pop or two.

Welcome to the clinic Dead Guy.

erichenryus: thanks. noise should be at a minimum. Was recorded straight from (highly shielded) bass to sound card (STAudio)

TripleM: nice song eh. Wait until you try it on piano. Melody part had a bit more highs and less lows on the bass controls & compressor a bit heavier to get it to stick out more. Maybe with tube DI, double tracking, chorus, ... I could have gotten fuller sound, but it was kind of inspiration of the moment. Timing was me, when I record at lower volumes I find it harder to get "into the song". The pops are there, it clips two or three times actually :D Nice ears!

nice......an interesting way to do something like this. The only thing I would fool with is the tone of the lead bass. it doesn't sound "woody" enough. Maybe in the EQ you could try a little boost in the low-mids....maybe aroun 850hz.

But the playing is very nice and the bass does sound good. I'm just being picky. :)

Freudian Slip & Lt.Bob: thanks for the kinds words. Next attempt at a song like this will be miking my amp, I guess it gets a warmer tone by itself then. Will try the 850Hz trick in a minute.

very nice man. I like the tones you had on the rythym. Reminds of this guitar player I been relishing that Bob James has been using for a while. I could hear the those new strings stick to your fingers a little in the last movement on the melody line, but it was very very pretty.

I'm not real sure what I think of this tune.Sounds to me like soundtrack material.
I mean it's good but I just don't know how to classify it.

I did listen to the girl from Ipanema though.Just had to love that song.Good job!
