first time recording

please help, i'm using an old fostex cassette 4-track
v-18??? I have managed to lay down some tracks that when i play back sound ok but when i try to mix it down on to my stereo i can only seem to get it to come out of one of the speakers. I have twiddled with the pan knobs but cannot seem to get my masterpiece to come out in stereo help me!!!!!!!!!!!
 
Did you check the cables? Do they work fine plugged into something else?


If the cables are OK, perhaps one of the output channels are dead. (You said it was an old machine, no?)
 
When you say it sounds "ok" when you're listening to it, do you mean that it's in stereo? If so, what are you listening to it on? I'd just run the cord from that to your tape deck, IE: if you're listening through a headphone jack and mixing down from stereo outs, maybe one of the stereo outs is dead or something, try running a cable from the headphone jack to your tape deck. Before you do any of that though, check the cables like AlChuck said :)

Are you using a stereo cable, or 2 mono cables? A stereo cable has 2 black lines, mono has one (on the plug).
