Well. I'm nervous.

I've been tinkering on and off with recording for a couple years now but recently had the opportunity to get some work in a local studio. I've also been working on a series of songs with a friend kinda forming a band. were about 2 months into the recording process now but I want to make sure I'm on the right track so I figured I would come here and post a sample of one of the songs we've been working on...

I'm very open to criticism as I need to know potential issues I have before I finish recording and mixing this album on my own. The mastering was done more to get it up to volume/level things out but feel free to suggest!

*side note*

The idea of this song was to make something with a dubstep feel (thus the name) with actual instruments, no samples or anything.

Allright, where do I start..... just kidding, its really not that bad at all. The thing the sticks out to me is the the drums seem really lifeless. The only thing on that drum track thats reasonable is the cymbals, but the rest is just reall dull. The kick is kind of boomy and thuddy, the snare is almost lost, it need to be louder and its very dull sounding. I'm not sure if its the mics you're using or you just need to spend more time on the eq. The toms are also very lifeless. My first thought was that they should be tuned, or maybe you have too much dampening material on them? The just dont sing like the should. I would suggest you spend some serious research time on micing drums and see if you can get some more life out of the drum track. A little effects on the drums wouldnt hurt either. The rest sounds pretty good to me, but the drums just arnt there yet.

drums..

ya drums are definitely my weak point when it comes to recording. I used an audix drum kit pack on them with an additional 57 on the kick for some of the snap but ended up taking it out because I couldn't get the 2 to blend nicely but I think its something I'm just going to have to fool around with a bit. I also don't know how to properly tune a drum kit and neither does my friend playing the drums but I think that's also something I need to learn so that I'm not trying to deaden the ring out of then before I track.

The song is well performed.

A couple of the guitar parts are a bit harsh sounding. The guitar part with the vibrato on it is the worst offender there.

Piano sounds good.

The kick kind of stabs you in the ears. I think the snare could come up a couple of db's. Cymbals sounded pretty good.
