Taking the slow road
Hey, I posted this on NWR. Did I do it right? It's just a quick test of MR-8 which is why i posted it on that thread over there for sample sound from MR-8. I post it here just to see if i did it right and for any comments on my acoustic sound. It's my first try and I tried for some kind of stereo. What do you think?

here is the link, i think:

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

well, there are alot of other people here besides me who can help you, but i'll tell you what i hear anyway!!:D first, there's alot of hiss, the rythm git is to far right, which is ok, but not for a whole tune, then your lead is way left( im guessing this is the stereo sound you are refering to) try this...leave the lead where it's at, and place the rythmn git center, or even better. double the rythmn ( or stereo mic it ) and fiddle with the panning of each rythmn track ( 1 left one right ) how far is up to you, but you will be suprised how this will "fatten" up your sound!!!:D someone will come along and give you some advice on the sound of the git's themselves, they sound a little harsh to me, but i have no idea how to fix them!

anyway, try the doubling or the stereo miking, you won't be dissapointed!!

thanks for the listen!!

peace

Thanks for reply. I actually used 2 mics and 2 channels to record, each guitar but each mic and chain were radically different. So the stereo I thought I was getting was based on 2 different EQ's on each side. I may have mixed them wrong. I'll mess with that again.

As far as doubling, I haven't tried it yet. I don't know if I can do it right. It'll never really be so close to the first one, the way I play. But I'll have to try it out.

The guitar is a cheap Fender acoustic, maybe it is harsh...

junplugged, you got the acoustics working. this sounds like some of my stuff. sounds like the mr-8 is gonna be great also. work on the pan a little and keep on tracking. and put a lot of stuff here. it amazes me what these guys can teach about music and recording.

dtb, thanks for listening and reply. Yea, this place is awesome. Even just reading posts I learn. Most questions are here already. And now with better speed, searches are faster and easier.

I noticed the lo-fi stream sounded really bad. Hi was fine. Also nice quality on a CD-R, but for some reason I had to use a slower burn speed, i got noise on higher. 12 to 24x.

I'll look for your stuff too. i need to hear more acoustic examples. Vocals are my next challenge.

that s a really soothing piece. The guitar is fine to me, for out of the gate for first time, you`ll get the eq and panning thing in time playing with your mr8 and listening to these guys. I`ll be hanging around to hear the next stuff ya do. Every step you take, ya get somewhere else :)

My first stuff sounded like 9 monkeys duct taped together in the back of cave with electric kazoos...

:)

Thanks for listening and commenting. I may have a monkey in there, but not 9 :)

Well, it's my first stuff with the MR8. I should dig into my archives and look for some old stuff. That's a good idea for a thread, post your old stuff that's funny or bad and in same post, the improved version or whatever....

I may have more to say, but my eyes are killing me and it's time to sleep again. Gotta get up at 5 am....

Hey Jun,
...... not too bad man. i listened to the blues jammy. Im looking forward to your full attempts.

g:)

Hey J!

Sounds pretty good, mabey a little rough on the strumming.
You could possibly try moving back from the mic a little.

Something that helped me was using a thin pick.
Iv'e always played rough with a medium pick,so it took some getting used to,but really helped.

I liked the tune,is it an original?

Looking foward to more.

Have a great holiday,
Pete

I'm listening on phones...

Not bad at all man. Some nice chords there...

I don't see anywhere that says what kind of mics...sounds kinda SM58ish. If so, not bad IMO. If you're looking for a really good acoustic sound, I believe condensors are the way to go. But I've achieved some really nice sounds with an SM58 too. And your sound nice here. I agree with the others...a little panning would help this recording by giving each track more space to shine its own colors.
I'm tempted to offer EQ suggestions here as well, but not while I'm listening on cans.

Anyway, nice tune man...it's good to hear blues stuff on this board :)

I'm going to install a spit screen between my nose and the monitor.
Pretty cool for just out of the gate. On hifi play, I can hear a fair amount of hiss. The acoustic sound you're getting is not bad at all. nice and full with no "woofyness" (this term is patent pending).

Okay...but I own the freakin' rights to "woofiness." I'm not sure the "y" makes yours all that much different, but I'm not in a very litigous mood today.

Thaks for all the comments.

Guernica - i got some time off so hopefully i'll get a full song up.

muzeman - I do hit the strings rough. And I was really close to one mic, the one without the preamp. I may get a 2 channel, but not before monitors - my next goal even before more recording....

as far as the tunes, they're just jams i did quickly. no lyrics, no songwriting, and i didn't like them much. now that i'm listening to them, they're growing on me like fungus... or like fungus could grow on me, if i let it... i don't really have any...

SLuiCe - I used a 57 close, and an ECM8000 thru Art V3 at 2 feet. Then the weird thing i did was to pan each hard opposite. then for the other dub, i did same but panned each mic opposite the first pair of tracks. just for some kind of alien pseudo stereo. I don't like the 57 so close, i was surprised how i like the ECM, but before more mics, I'm going for monitors.

The MR8 is toyish in that it has no EQ. Except for 3 'mastering' buttons that i'll post results with soon.

Track Rat - I thought i was goning to have hiss with the ECM, but thru the Art V3 i figured it would cut some. I just tried that mic, not sure if i'll be using it much, esp if i can't filter w/ EQ or something.

Glad no woof b/c that's one thing i wanted to avoid. :)

a wise decision IMO...what good are mics if you can't hear what they're really doing?

As for dynamic mics...I think you would have better results on acoustic guitars with a 58 than a 57.... at least that was my experience.
