I am ready to buy my first soundcard. I am going to go with the SB Live because it's cheap and I need womething to get my feet wet with. I am just worried that the high pitched noise coming out of my speakers will not be solved with a new card. Do you think that the noise is because of the card that came with my 'puter? Will a better card solve the noise problem?

You need to isolate what is causing the noise - is it the soundcard or the speakers themselves. Have you tried a different pair of speakers? If it is not the speakers, then it probably is the soundcard, so getting a new one should fix the drama

I have tried different speakers so I think that it is the card. Are the card and speakers the only things that can cause the noise?

No, but generally they are the only ones that DO cause the noise. The inside of a computer is a veritable smorgasbord of electrical noise, in particular from the disk drives and CD-ROM (they have motors in them, which cause heaps of interference).

It could also be somthing NEAR the computer, like a fridge etc. Have a look round, and turn things off to test. Also see if there are any cables from any appliance (in particular power cables) that are running parallel to the speaker cable. This can also cause a reasonable amount if interference.

These kind of noises can be a pain to track down - it's all a process of elimination

you can get the d-man pci for 99$. from what i've heard it's much better than th sb live.

Try this ... turn your monitor off and on and see if that affects the squeal.
If you're not using sheilded monitors, this could be the problem.
