Mr. Moon

Force of Naked
Hi,

Please check out my tune called "war#10" (the only one I have posted right now) and let me know what you think. The song has not had vocals laid down yet, as I'm looking for feedback on everything else (quality and content) before I plunge into the vocals. As this is my first-ever Sonar project, I'd like to get some fresh-ears to listen and give me their honest opinions and critiques. Post your feedback to the group and/or via the email address listed on the web page.

The song was posted with a bare-minimum mix, and no mastering whatsoever. Actually, I just set the sliders in Sonar 2 and exported it to audio, and made the mp3 from that. I was hoping to get feedback to learn how to get the sound I'm after, so I made sure to keep it as "natural" as possible. If anyone has any suggestions regarding mastering, please include those comments too!

**Warning: The song contains "old-school" heavy metal, so if you hate this genre of music enough not to be impartial and un-biased, you may not want to listen.

Hey there...Welcome.

Since this is a little out of my "genre," I'll just take a shot at a mix comment. It sounds like it's pretty hyped in the low end, but it may be intentional. Like the gits...lotta', lows, lotta' highs...that's what gives it the crunch...which is cool. If this was going to stay an instrumental, I'd cut back on some of the lows and get some mids in the mix, but since vocals are on the way, they've got a nice wide space to fit in the mix right in the center, so it may be fine.

Nice guitar work and tone for the solo.

Rock on,
Chris

Wouldn't really call it Old School Metal, to me that would be like Sabbath and Judas Priest, this kind of like Metallica or Testament or something.

When the drums came in I was wondering where the sizzle was, needs like louder hi hats and crashes, panned in stereo. Everything's kind of dark and murky, also a bit distant sounding.

Have to hear it with vocals, hope they're not that singing frog death metal type! ;- )

There will be *NO* death-metal frog vocals....

I promise!

:)

By "old-school" I was referring to the fact that the guitars in the song are in standard tuning, and that there's a solo...., Today's metal doesn't seem to include too many solos. The guitars also take much more of an overall melodic role, rather than the overwhelming percussive role they take on in today's metal.

What would you suggest for mastering?

Thanks for the feedback!

The kick is eating the mix, not to mention the speakers.

Kind of repetitve with no vocals.

Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate all of it, good *and* bad...

:)

I would, however, like to ask for some more mixing and mastering feedback to get some ideas how to separate the bass guitar and the kicks in the mix. Right now they're sharing space and masking each other too much.

What are the EQ points people usually place these instruments in to get the best overall "heavy" sound? I have tried moving the bass up a bit and the licks down, and vice-versa, but I just can't seem to get it quite right.

TIA!
