first time really recording... for a local band - punk rock

Alrigiht guys...

this is my first time really recording a band other then my own....
and I am REALLY REALLY pleased with the results.

They are all punk songs...from an all punk band..ha

i got 10 songs total up - for now, there are 4 songs up there....

rip them apart - mixing wise...this time i'm not AS interested in music part of it...i'm just the engineer!!! (i wish i could be called that! ha..)

really though-

sounds pretty good to my ears.

The vocal sounds a little dull and the space is not in your face. Other than that, you've got a pretty good recording.

I listened to "to resist"

Shack I think these mixes sound really good....

I don't have any complaints with the overall mix....I think the levels are good - I agree that the vocals sound a little bit dull at parts, "where did the time go" vocals sound a little duller than "to resist" to my ears...

But, I think the music is nice. Definately something I would put out on CD if it were my band. And way better than what most bands like them have. They also seem pretty competent musically.

I love the radio segments like in the middle of "Time" and the beginning of resist...

Did they pick those out? Where were they from?

What all gear did you use - how long did you spend mixing etc this whole thing?

I guess overall it definately has a "local" sound to it - the sum of all the parts isn't "in your face" like a new found glory...

But that's the difference between a lot of the pros/pro gear....in the end.

Who knows, they may even prefer this sound.

Nice work!

i record with:
2 sm58's on drum overheads
57 on snare
at pro 25 on kick.

sm57 on guitar cabs
sm57 on bass cab
sm58 on vox

went to computer (ntrack)...through an extremely shitt sound card (SB awe 16...5 years old)...ha

beheringer mx802a for mic pre's.

mixing i used sonic foundry paragraphic eq, blueline compressors..etc. endorphin in some cases to limit.
mixing took about a week to get all those done...on and off....not completely done yet i suppose.

i'm thinkin of getting 2 ecm8000's for overheads (except my room is terrible for sound....old crappy basement..photos at www.shackrockrecordings.com ). also, maybe a Studio projects new B1 for vocals?

Hey Shack, I'm checking out "to Resist" right now. Pretty cool! I dig punk rock. Especially with that snotty edge. :) Nice drum sounds. And you have an even worse sound card than mine!!

THe track has a beefy sound to it, the bass is huge. The guitars sound a little thin. Were they double-tracked? The bass helps make up for it, though. A nice thick low end without any massive "thumps" or other dynamic issues. Wow, those drums do sound really good to me. :)

The ending chorus part--"To resist is to live"-- gets a wee bit muddy on th chunky sections. Maybe slightly over-compressed?

The track has a cool punk demo sound. "Quality garage" if you will, and I mean that in a totally good way. The drums really give it a "fresh" sound, if that makes any sense, a bit of crispness to add a wee bit of that "hi-fi" sound. Can you tell that I think the drums came out the best yet? :D

Very cool!

i'm glad you like the drums - i think most people would disagree with that because of the cymbal sounds (using those sm58's as overheads isn't ideal...haha).

Yeah, maybe a condenser would have brought out more of the highs on the cymbals--but I think the snare and such sounds pretty good. And the cymbals sit well in the mix, not leaping out with harsh freqs. And I heard something on this BBS about somebody big (was it U2?) using a 58 as an overhead once. :) Could be wrong....?
