Hi, this is my first recording with decent equipment that I'd appreciate some feedback on:

Bright Star

A few notes on the recording:
I wanted my first submission to be a simple piece with minimal tinkering.

the gtr(cheapo antares) was recorded with a C1 on the bridge and a MXL 990 at the 12th fret which were panned L/R. I recorded it 3 times: once holding the pick loosely(bright stringy sound), once holding the pick firmly(fuller sound), and once with a thumb strum(bassy. my guitar is overly bright). I mixed these to taste and added some compression and reverb. No eq.

I recorded the vocal in a pretty dead room with a C1 about 8 to 12 inches away a couple inches above my mouth pointed slightly downward with the hpf engaged. I recorded one lead vocal and two softer voiced backups that I panned L/R and brought them in and out for accompaniment. Added moderate compression and reverb. No eq. No mastering compression or eq.

Please let me know what you think. I'm looking to improve so any critique is helpful. Thanks.

hey bergen I'm listening right now...

Off the top, I like the "authentic" feeling of the mix.

In the beginning, the guitar was a little over your voice, maybe you could just tweak it a hair, turn the guitar a pinch down and turn the vocals a pinch up.

I think a little EQ on the vocals may make them a little "brighter".

The guitar sorta swallows some of the beatiful notes your hitting, try boosting the lead vocals maybe 1 to 1.5 dbs around 3000hz.

I'm really feeling the lyrics, you have some good imagery,

I think it repeated,

yeah man, the vocals in the beginning defintly should come up a notch, right when you say "a stroke of luck" till "it was all downhill from there" I didnt hear it clear the first time...

Good mix though man, The reverb was perfect, the backup vocals were subtle and effective.

Check out my mix that I've been obsessing over in this forum,

peace bergen

Thanks for the feedback crisp. My voice was a little off that day so I was covering it up too much with the guitar. I assume when you and others recommend an eq boost/cut at a given frequency a Q of 1 is assumed. Let me know if not.

I thought I'd give my post one last bump to see if anyone else was willing to chime in? I'd appreciate any more feedback. Thanks
