Yup, in over 8 years of working in "real" studios, I had my first no-show today. Couldn't freakin' believe it!!! I left 2 messages, both after the session was supposed to start, before I got a call back 2 hours after the start time from one of the band members saying they wouldn't be there. The reason's they gave? The guitar player got too drunk last night.

Luckily, I still have all the media and the drum tracks that WERE paid for. Normally, the studio policy is to get a deposit up-front, but the leader of this band is a client from long ago who was always responsible and timely, so I talked the owner into letting them forego deposit's. Silly me!!!

So, we stuck them with 1/2 the day rate (that was a "good will" gesture from the studio owner) that has to be paid before any other sessions can be booked, and now their sessions will not be considered booked UNTIL the deposit it paid. We won't "hold" days for them. Nothing. They can book when they pay for it. :)

What a freakin' day!

I've never had any no-shows in about a 1000 sessions...I am guessing(in many years past). But people sure did like to show up late. ...half hour here...45 minutes there....

gtr player was drunk, eh?? well, at least they didn't waste everyone's time, I suppose ..trying to look on the brightside of things. "A little" drunk is usually ok... REALLY drunk at a session REALLY sucks. You start to fear for equipment:eek:

on the other end. Boy, there sure where a lot of sessions scheduled to end at midnight (for instance) and went on..and on...and on...and on..... hey..someone get breakfast!!

Yeah, this sure was a a strange one. I usually have a very good feel for people that are going to be flakey and get deposit's. But the bass player in this band has always been good about keeping things going. I was totally shocked that nobody showed! With the three bands of his that I have recorded, that has never happened. He called again RIGHT as I submitted this thread in reference to a message I left after the session was cancelled where I basically gave him the riot act about booking studio time. He must have apologized 100 times and is going to pay the 1/2 day penelty tomorrow and probably just drop a deposit for a future date at the same time.

The shitter was that I turned down other work for today and so did the studio owner! He has only had this happen a couple times in 9 years, and like I said, this is the first time it has happened to me in 8 years.

So now instead of working on a cool session, I am packing boxes for moving over the next 3 days!!! My girlfriend wasted NO time putting me to work on this shit. Crap!!!! Where is the justice in this I ask!!!! :D

Hell, slow down, put your feet up, have a mint julep. Out of all those sessions you`ve done and this is the first , that aint too bad. And the plus side is your gonna get more cash as well as gettin the babe satisfied. I`d capitalize on this scene in a hurry... :)

oww poor petal got a bit tipsy last night and cant play the next day...now theres the making of a great performer...NOT!

You know the deal, I would have to show the money!

Getting more cash? I lost half of what I was supposed to make today!!! We are moving the next three days and now I am in a bit of a pinch.

ever since I moved to this new place, and started having to deal with a large percent rap client base, no shows are par for the course

Yo yo yo Ed,

Sorry to hear the news, helping to move sucks. The wife and I moved into our first home a month and a half ago and I forgot how crappy moving was.

One a different note, I wanted to drop you a line. The old band is back together with all the original members. Al and I are still playing in our other projects, but the 'spunsters are back at it with a handfull of songs. Keep your eyes peeled we should be back in the scene in a few months with all new stuff...and some old stuff of course.

You were the best sound tech we had man, you blew the doors off everyone else in this town. Take it easy and act like every box is really heavy, then you only have to move half as much crap :D

Hey Ken. Man, that should be pretty cool having the old band back together! Definately, let me know when you guys are going to play a gig. In fact, when you guys are ready to play a gig, let me know and maybe I can get you guys and The Red Sector together for a gig in July or August (they are booked up until then). Of course, I am still available for hire too! ;)

Yea, I was going to say, Ed . . . you must not be working with the hip-hoppers very much. :D :D

Funny thing that........ how can you book a session and not show up???
I have noticed one thing here Ed, as a couple of different engineers do sessions here. The ones that let people get away with it...............are the ones that get no-shows.
I have not had any, but I make sure people know before they book time that time booked = time paid, and that's the reason I have not had them.

Yeah sjoko2, we normally normally require AT LEAST a half deposit on all sessions booked unless we really know the client well. In this case, it was a client I have worked with often in the past and he has spent a good amount of money to have me engineer the bands he has been in. They WILL be paying for all sessions up front now though before we will even book the date. Since our remodel, we have never had a weekend day NOT booked! The time lose hurt both me and the studio owner as he has rather large loans to pay back now and I need to money to move.

I don't get into the hip hop circles at all. I won't mix them live, and I avoid them in the studio. The owner has one rap client, and they have been very solid clients. We aren't looking for rap at the studio really. We turn down a LOT of rap clients because after talking to them, we get a funny feeling about working with them, so we usually just price them right into another studio, and also make them pay up front (which they NEVER want to do).
