This is my first mix on actual monitors not computer speakers. It's pre-production before my band hits a real studio. However, I was thinking about maybe recording other bands for a little side money, so I'd like to get the best results possible. Please help. My gear right now is pretty sparce, but I think there is still plenty of room for improvement with what I've got.

My current setup:
drums - CAD drum mics > beringer mixer > mbox
guitars - sm57 and AT3035 > mbox
bass - direct > mbox
vox - AT3035 > mbox

Monitors - Event TR5

First off - The song sounds pretty good writing and performance wise.

The main problem I hear are the drums --
This is what I hear:
A ton of cymbals crashing away with a snare whacking around back there somewhere.

I don't know what you have for separation (ie number of drum tracks)but if you can bring up the whole kit EXCEPT those cymbals maybe tweak 'em with some eq. Get a little stereo panning going.

Again the song quality and performance are great.

Thanks

yeah, the drums were a big problem. We ran everything through a beringer mixer directly to the MBox. They should be stereo, but they don't sound like it to me either. I can try to bring the cymbals down and snare up with EQ.

try this one:

wow, sounds better already. The snare is coming through now. Try bringing up the bass drum as well.
Again I like the tune alot, and it's growing on me more and more..I like that jangley guitar that comes up in the back ground during the chorus (under "on a better day") .

Wow, I really like that song. I first listened to the first mix you put up and I was going to comment on the drums being to back in the mix and the guitars and cymbals being too loud. Then I scrolled down and listen to the the newer mix and I must say you did great improvement getting clarity with the drums having only a stereo track. The kick is punchier the snare is nice and the cymbals aren't taking over the mix. I don't know if you brought the guitars down or if I'm just hearing the drums better but good job man.
I just got monitors and man what a difference it makes. I was mixing on a bookshelf stereo system and man what a night and day difference.
I'm getting ready to record my band and I too am limited to just a stereo drum track so you give me hope. Nice job.

thanks. I played with eq quite a bit before I could get things to where they sounded decent. I hate the way the vox are sounding though. but I suppose there isn't much I could do about it. As it was, everyhing was recorded in a busy pool hall my buddy owns - vox included. You would not believe the looks I was getting while tracking vocals. haha.
