first mix of a new rocker: "Michael's House"

The opening riff reminds me of an AIC tune. The drums are busy/prominent and are tending to dominate.
I like your avatar (been reading about the Mandelbrot set recently)

i re-eq'd the file a bit, to take a bit of the bottom off,
and re-linked the tune

The instruments are played pretty well in this one, especially the guitars. The mix reminds me of something from the 70s. If that's what you were going for, good job!

I felt that it was lacking in dynamics a bit. There's no punch to the low end. Also, the high end is lacking that sizzle from the cymbals and slaps from the drums. The bass sounds like it could be a octave pitched guitar. I know it's not but it doesn't have the thump it needs.

The drums and bass need the most work. But this is a cool tune and I like the vintage feel to it. As I said before, if you were going for a vintage sound, great work.

you know, i never ever write songs with a genre in mind..
i let them develop naturally, let em go in whatever direction they want.

it is an intense song, and by definition of 'intense', it never really backs down, therefore robbing dynamics....
this is by design.
it's more like going into a chant state....
i find any more 'sizzle' on the cymbals, just makes my ears tired..
and this song sits right in the middle of 9 others, so part of the eq choices has to do with pacing for an upcoming album (#4).

Well then, it sounds like the song was already how you wanted it in the first place. I really do like the guitar work on this. Good stuff.

heh, sorta like i want it,
but i'm really just getting started on this one......

i think the vocal will tie it all together.....

part of this song, is a celebration of a friend who has passed....

the first part, is when he was alive.

the 2nd part, is a remembrance.

i'm still working on the lyric...

i think i'll take another complete pass at the drums,

and use parts of the 'driving' sections, probably during the verses, and break it down for the bridges, and the middle section....

i have two completely different drum tracks programmed,

the one here, is actually the two tracks interposed on top of each other,

as if there are two drummer at once, like with the grateful dead or the allman bros.,
that was the idea with the busy drums.

then mix will continue to develop as i finish the ideas and refine those drums!

Cool tune, man. The high hats are two upfront from where I’m sitting in a little bit distracting.
