This is the first mp3 I have ever mixed here. Tell me what you think. Please be very honest. And don't get distracted with the site...it might look better when I have some time to devote to it. It's been a 5 minute job so far. Just enough to allow the other people in the band to download and monitor the progress of the song. Any way....here's the link

I don't even want to look at this one in a spectrum analyzer....

Ehhhhh....man, I think you might want to tame that high end. Seriously, 9 out of 10 pygmy goats agree, its OK to have some low frequencies in your vocals.

guitars sound pretty good. The problem is with the vocals ...they should be louder ... and sound overcompressed to me ... as well as exaggerated in the high freqs. It also sounds like the singers were too close to the mic ... it's hard to understand the words. If you can, I'd redo the vocals and back them off a bit.
Not bad for your first post, though. :)

I was having a super hard time with the vocals. Especially the female vocals. When they were recorded they were VERY sylabiant (lot's of s's and c's). listening to the song now that I have heard that sugguestion I have realized the female vocals could have a little more low end and less on the top.

Thanks for your opinions...keep them coming.

Just listening on cheapie headphones at work, from what I can hear of the song I really like it! But the recording takes a bit away from it. It seems to be based on Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet?) What equipment did you use? I do agree with the other technical problems...But the song is my cup of tea. I love folky acoustic stuff.
The harmonica is a nice suprise, kind of brings a Neil Young feel to it, even though the rest of song is not very Neil Youngish. Thanks for sharing!

Good to hear that you like it. The equipment used was a Mackie 1202V-Pro, two AKG C1000's, mixed on a Duron 600 with 128MB Ram running windows 98 and N-Track Studio version 2.3. My monitors are the best in the world (just kidding :)) I am mixing on Altec Lansing computer speakers.
One question Gordone...what do you mean the recording takes away from the song, what you mean?

Also I took out a lot of the higher end treble and I have to agree I do like it better that way...although I am a very treble hungry kind of a person.

The talent is there.

The song is sweet. The arrangement is fitting.

The guitar and harmonica sound is good.

I presume what Gordone means is that the song could be tracked and mixed better. The vocals are too good to be hidden under that blanket of high frequencies. That's a compliment. Did you add the high end AFTER tracking or via the mixer going in?

Don't feel bad about your "monitor setup". I also have no choice but to mix to PC speakers, or a 15 year-old boom box (which annoyingly accentuates high frequencies - extremely misleading).

From what part of Canada do you hail?

Try Listening to Shadows and Images (2). I did a bit of the vocal work sugguested. I have found though that I cannot get a good sounding Female vocal without having in such high frequencies. If I add some low end to the voice it seems to get very muddy and clouds up very easily. The Vocals were recorded dry (EQ set to unity on the mixer). Thanks about the compliments on the vocals. Oh by the way I came from the middle of the country...Manitoba.

Thanks for the encouragement and feedback. I appreciate it!

sae..

I can't get your tune to download.. I click on it and it doesn't do anything.

Man, I could have spotted the C1000's from a mile away. Anyone considering a C1000 purchase should be made to listen to this song. The amazing thing is I don't think all that high freq harshness could possibly be coming from the mic. Honestly, if you're using C1000's, you should be rolling off the highs more than boosting them. Personally, I would sell off the C1000's (they actually have a decent resale value - perhaps the only redeeming quality) and start over with a Marshall MXL-603S, a decent LD condenser, and a basic dynamic.

sae,

Thanks... that worked.

Nice song. I think I agree that the compression is a little too heavy. I have a feeling that you are going for that "mastered" sound.

Nice voices and guitar work.

A little more low end and mids in the whole mix might be nice. Fatten up the guitar a little and get those vocals to work a little better. I had to give my speakers a fair amount of volume to hear anything, because at low volumes all you hear is the high end.

Great job for a first post!

Also listened to the "remix" of the same song... sound better, but it seems like you cut the upper mids, and not the highs... still pretty brittle on the high end. The low end is better, but for some reason has sort of a hollow sound. My guess is that what I am hearing is your room sound being amplified by the compressor. You might want to back off on the compression and see if that helps the vocals sound a little more natural.
