hi everyone. i'm thinking about upgrading my existing project studio. i've been using protools 001 for 2 years now and am not very happy with the sound quality or the way digidesign develops for mac.

i've been reading through these posts and people sometimes talk about sound quality. that just happens to be the single biggest factor when i consider a new daw, preamps, plugins, etc.

i'm wondering if there is a way for me to use my own ears and gear to do some tests on various audio interfaces, plugins etc. what do the pros look for or listen for in good converters and pres. how can i aquire first hand knowledge? cause frankly these boards can be pretty confusing. i know i have to start with a good ear, and i do believe my ears are pretty good.

and ofcoarse i'd love to hear what you guys have to say about DAWS with great pres, cconverters, and plugins that do really nice math.... good verbs, eqs, delays, compressions. right now i like waves stuff alot. and i've heard great things about altiverb.

i'm thinking under 2k for the whole thing.

much thanks.
