TelePaul

J to the R O C
I was going through some blank CDs this evening - most of them without boxes or labels - and found my first ever recording. I don't think I've ever posted it here before and for good reason! I guess I was 17/18 at the time and I recorded it with a friend of mine - it was the closest I ever got to being in a real band.

This was before I knew how to use a metronome, MIDI, loops or any of that stuff that pisses Greg L off so much. I knew even less about tracking, and the acoustic guitar was recorded with a pretty cheap sennheiser dynamic mic - as were the vocals and harmonica. I guess the electric guitar went straight through my soundcard - micing an amp was something that never occurred to me - as did the bass. I don't imagine the tracks experienced much in the way of processing or mixing - I had a reverb plug in, I think that might have been it, as Cubasis VST was pretty unforgiving; I don't know if anyone here used it, it was the precursor to Cubase LE.

I tried to salvage it a little (the session files are long since gone) by running the whole thing through a compressor and master limiter. It's still pretty rough though - think Bob Dylan and the Band's Basement Tapes and you're on the right track.

A few things came to mind when listening to it. First off, my old man is a pretty cool guy - he bought me the stuff I needed to record music, and he's been a source of finance, advice and support over the years. He's even thrown down a vocal track or two, but some of those got left on the cutting room floor! :D I had my first Telecaster for the track, which was a present from my mum when I was 17. It's still the nicest guitar I've ever played, even if the finish has seen better days. So thanks to her too. The guy singing vocals on that track was a friend from school, I don't see a whole lot of him anymore and he isn't into music so much these days. My guitar playing hasn't changed alot over the years, in that it still needs alot of work! ;) But songs like this are the ones I listen to most, the ones I play the most, and when I very occasionally write songs, in my head at least they sound like this.

So here you go, a shocking cover of Neil Young's Helpless.

Nice. I like your voice better than Neils's. I like the softer tone, but it sounds like you're holding back a bit, as if you don't want to distrub someone in the next room. But I love the intimacy of it.

And it sounds good. :D

Sounds pretty good Paul-its cool you added the Tele at the end there too.
Did you ever get the Gibson you were talking about around Christmas time, by the way?

Hey Tony! Actually I went with a Yamaha Pacifica, it's a pretty versatile Strat-style guitar. I'm liking it.

I agree...sonds kinda like a young, shy Neil....:D

Not bad at all man...pretty decent performance, and the mix sounds fine to me...

No wonder you weren't ashamed to post your first recording, it sounds good! This beats the life out of my first recordings. Mixed it better than my crappy ears ever could of mixed on my first mix. The volumes sound nice and the reverb was used just right! Good shiz telepaul. Why no more bands after this?:)

Hey man what's up? Thanks for those kind words. Why no bands? I ask myself the same question sometimes. I think a band requires alot of things to fall perfectly into place at exactly the right time.

That 'band' kinda just fell apart. We had a bassist who wanted to play live really badly - it seems this is a common thing amongst young musicians, though he wasn't too worried about how the music sounded, he just wanted to be on a stage. He started jamming with another band, I think I played the bass part on Helpless when he didn't show up. For me, I'd rather deliver a perfect performance strumming away in my own bedroom than give less than 100% on a stage. As for the singer, well we kinda lost touch when we left school. We did jam a few times with his friend on piano and that was a really cool sound, very full. Soundwise it came reasonably close to the guys I idolize, but it didn't last.

I have a few more old tunes I might post if I get around to it. I think there's a semi-decent Posion cover and a Grateful Dead cover....

I hadn't heard the original. This one is actually a lot better in my opinion.

Do you happen to have an MP3 you could send me? Sometimes SoundClick has problems and I can't listen to it.

...I guess it's supposed to sound honest! :D
And it does. I enjoyed it immensely. There's something about it that reminds me of the reasons I became a musician... maybe it's your description of it in the first post.:)

Thanks man, means alot. It was a bit of a nostalgia trip, even though I'm only 21. Hope I still have it at 51 or 61.

Hey Danny, just saw this now. Yup, no probs. I can yousend it maybe? Drop me a PM with your details! Cheers man.

Don't know the original, but thats way better than my first recording.

Really enjoyed this, for a first recording it sounds like you still captured what's most important, the emotion in the music. The vibe here is great, feels like a live recording in a small room. Very nice :)

Dropped you a PM. Until then I'll just have to keep listening to it on SoundClick. :p
