TelePaul
J to the R O C
I was going through some blank CDs this evening - most of them without boxes or labels - and found my first ever recording. I don't think I've ever posted it here before and for good reason! I guess I was 17/18 at the time and I recorded it with a friend of mine - it was the closest I ever got to being in a real band.
This was before I knew how to use a metronome, MIDI, loops or any of that stuff that pisses Greg L off so much. I knew even less about tracking, and the acoustic guitar was recorded with a pretty cheap sennheiser dynamic mic - as were the vocals and harmonica. I guess the electric guitar went straight through my soundcard - micing an amp was something that never occurred to me - as did the bass. I don't imagine the tracks experienced much in the way of processing or mixing - I had a reverb plug in, I think that might have been it, as Cubasis VST was pretty unforgiving; I don't know if anyone here used it, it was the precursor to Cubase LE.
I tried to salvage it a little (the session files are long since gone) by running the whole thing through a compressor and master limiter. It's still pretty rough though - think Bob Dylan and the Band's Basement Tapes and you're on the right track.
A few things came to mind when listening to it. First off, my old man is a pretty cool guy - he bought me the stuff I needed to record music, and he's been a source of finance, advice and support over the years. He's even thrown down a vocal track or two, but some of those got left on the cutting room floor!
I had my first Telecaster for the track, which was a present from my mum when I was 17. It's still the nicest guitar I've ever played, even if the finish has seen better days. So thanks to her too. The guy singing vocals on that track was a friend from school, I don't see a whole lot of him anymore and he isn't into music so much these days. My guitar playing hasn't changed alot over the years, in that it still needs alot of work!
But songs like this are the ones I listen to most, the ones I play the most, and when I very occasionally write songs, in my head at least they sound like this.
So here you go, a shocking cover of Neil Young's Helpless.
