Hi Peeps,

I wonder if someone could be as kind to either point me to some doucumentation, or guide me in the best way to add my first peice of outboard euipment to my setup. I have just purchased a TC Electronics M350 reverb.

I will list what i currently have and how its set up.

Powermac G5.
M-Audio 1814
M-Audio Octane Pre
Samson S-Phone Headphone Amp
Event TR8 Monitor speakers.
5 assorted microphones

So, i have the 1814 firewired up to the mac, output 1/2 into my monitors, 3/4 into the S-Phone, then a ADAT cable into the Octane, then the 5 various mic's into the octane to mic up my drumkit...

And now i am just stuck as to the most efficient way to hook the reverb up, and then configure it in ProTools. Do i need anymore kit ? A mixer perhaps?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Will.

Coax spidf in out. Out of the 1814, into the 350, out of the 350 into the 1814.

I don't use protools, but you will need to set up an external effects loop, using the coax connections, so you send perhaps out of a folder/group track, then back in on a regular track. Every recording software package is different. But it would be very nice to use the coax digital connections, as that keeps everything digital, and the signal never goes analog.

Hi SSR, thanks for your reply.

I also thought that using the S/PDIF would be the best solution, but i couldnt manage to get S/PDIF and ADAT to work at the same time.. maybe it was something i was doing wrong.. do you know if the 1814 is capable of running these two at the same time.

Thanks again!

Will

Thats a good question, does your ADAT equipment have word clock ins or outs? I don't know much about units that have ADAT and regular SPIDF ins/outs, and how you sync the two digitally. But something has to be the master clock somewhere along the lines.

And just a question but do you really need the two to work at the same time, as the reverb should be used on mix down, what ADAT device will/are you using during mix down? That was just a question, not implying you can't or shouldn't be able to use both at the same time, which I think you should be able to....I think.

Hey SSR,

Yeh, the 1814, has word clock ins and outs, just like the Octane Pre does. i have them two connected up at the moment together (out on 1814, in on Octane, in on 1814, out on octane) i guess if im going to start using S/PDIF on the M350, then id have to loop that in also?

In answer to your question, i dont really know why i want to have both on at the same time! I guess i was just thinking, that id need to have some reverb on while recording things, to see how it sounds, but your right really as its probably only needed after the recording has been layed down.. but again, i have no idea on the best and most efficient way to run outboard equipment..

Yah some people do like to give singers reverb during recording, I don't do it, tried once and my wife told me to turn it off during a tracking session. Never tried again. Some say it can give the singer a confidence boost while singing, but others say it may mess with their minds and they can get sloppy on you. Its all personal preference I guess.

Ok onto getting these things sync'd (remember I have no idea what I am talking about), can you set the 350 to master clock in the m-audio software? I know when I had a ART DPS II pre, that I could set that as the master clock that my M-audio PCI card sync'd to, and that was using a SPIDF connection. Anyways then run a BNC cable from your 1814 word clock out to your octanes word clock in. Will that get everything in sync?

make sure in PT,

Optical is set to ADAT, clock source should be whatever..
Coax is Spdif then im pretty sure.

unless optical is set to spdif and coax is set to analog... i forget which menu its under, something around hardware...

wait im kidna slow, this is the setup for my digi002 and PT.. i dont know, it shoiudl work..

SRR, I shall get some more sync cables, and sort that out this weekend! and report back!

TragikRemix,
thanks for your reply, could you tell me the best way to set it up in protools, ie. should i create an aux channel, and put that onto a buss, then fire my tracks into the buss ? im not sure of the best way (or teminology, im relativley new to ProTools)

Many thanks
Will

i think, depending on how you set it up,

you might want to set it up as

track output -> (wherever it is, say outs 3/4)
then aux -> (input = where you are returning it from, say input 7/8) and leave that output to master (1/2, or whatever it is.)

otherwise, you could set up another audio track if you want, with the same deal.

try that out, see how it works. i don't use any outboard gear yet but thats how i would most likely do it.

think of it like using an effects send/return on a mixer, its the same principle, except you are making the send, two of your outputs, and the return, 2 of your inputs.

(or if it is mono, then youre just using one channel of each.
