My first attempt at recording something in Cubase VST from scratch... need some brutally honest critisism.

The guitar work is great. Here are a couple of suggestions:

1. For this kind of tune the drums should sound really BIG! They sound a little flat right now, so try tweaking your mix.
2. The guitar tone is a little muddy in places. What are you using for distortion and effects?

yeah... I tried adding more processing to the drums but as soon as I do, it overtasks my CPU and the sound cuts out so I can't hear the mix anymore... I have to kinda guess and then listen to the exported mixdown.
I think maybe I'm gonna have to bounce the drums and guitar to a smaller number of tracks and print the effects to tape.. or whatever it's called in digital. Right now I've got each part separate (hihat, kick, snare etc...) and it takes up 14 tracks for drums and about 12 for guitar...
the guitar is straight line in with a Boss ME-5 multi-effects pedal and a cabinet simulator. ... again tho... as soon as I start playing around with the EQ or adding VST effects the sound craps out.

great guitar work GP, did you get ALL the latest drivers for ALL your hardware? even mainboard bios and cpu? i had to tweak the crap out of my pc to get my HR software to run flawlessly. Good luck to you and i really like ALL your stuff! sick and twisted is good for me

yes...good gtr playing. The drums need to be in a wider stereo field, and bigger sounding. Except for your dbl tracked (or more) gtrs, things are very mono-ish. I mono'd the playback, and yeah, there is a difference, but mainly in your ambiance/reverb, it seems. Your single gtr is right on top of your bass too. There is a track off to the left (in the beginning), but it is so low, I can't really tell what it is...it sounds like a organ,or something. When you have a power trio, it is hard to decide how to pan things, and the split, cliche lead gtr can be nothing new either. So.....ah...aa...I don't know what to say. Maybe a split bass sound, and slightly better too, might improve that track, give you better low end excitement to listen to, and generally perk up that track. Like a chorus split, maybe. BUt!!...when your dbl tracked gtrs first come in, then the bass outta go back to mono.
oh...the reverb on the fade out....bad reverb...sounds like a cheap spring, or a lousy plug in. Put a nicer verb there or none at all would be my choice. Nice use of time signatures, btw.

guitar playing and overall tune was pretty cool....must've been a pain in the hienie programming those drums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Liked the doubled bass and guitar at the intro....time changes made things keep pretty interesting....
I felt at times like the background instrument could've been brought up during what would be the 'verse' parts....maybe even slapping in a cool crunchy rhythm...
When everything stops and the lead takes over, it's a nice change.

Is that a real slap bass in the middle section?

For a first time, I'd grade ya an 'A'!
