firewire speed based on cpu or device?

I am thinking about getting a firepod in the near future.

does it use firewire 400 or firewire 800?

I don't have a system with firewire, but I plan to get that too (debating whether i should get firewire 400, or wait and get firewire 800, if I plan to get a firepod)

The Firepod is firewire 400.
The only firewire 800 device on the market now is the RME Fireface 800 (which by the way will also work as a firewire 400 device).
