firewire interface

I'm using CEP, on desktop and laptop. My question: If you use a firewire interface, such as a Presonus 8ch firepod, does CEP automatically detect it as an available input device? All 8 channels?

It's not automatic.

First, right-click on the speaker icon in the tool tray, to be sure your input device is recognized by Windows. Select it for "audio" if it hasn't been already. Then open Cool Edit Pro and go to Options/Device Order and make sure your inputs are selected in the right-hand column. Tip: click on "Use in EV" for your selected I/O [you go to different tabs for record or playback routing] or you'll wonder why you can't hear the playback in Edit View.
 
Thanks for your response. I don't have the firewire device yet. I wanted to make sure this would work before I got it. I'm still kinda new at this.

So, I'm assuming once it is set up in the Device Order, CEP will recognize all 8 inputs from the firewire device when selecting recording source in multi-track view?

Basically, yes. I say "basically" because it's a two-step process in that you have to tell CEP which inputs (and outputs) you'll be using AND you have to assign I/O for the channels. Since CEP displays which I/Os are in use, it becomes pretty natural, and you can save any configuration by going to [Multi-Track View] File/Default Session/Set Current Session as Default and it will remember how you set it up for future sessions. Very handy when you're recording a series of songs, all using the same assignments, as when you have everyone set up in a room and you're using the same mics, DIs, etc for each song.

I'm using WDM drivers with 1.5 with unlimited (as far as my hardware supports) duplex I/O. AA 2.0 and above is touted as supporting ASIO; although I used 2.0 for a couple of years, I have reverted to 1.5 due to other considerations, and I can't tell the difference between using WDM and ASIO. This may simply be because my setup uses more traditional hardware mixers rather than the modern computer interfaces.

If you have a purely DAW setup (minimal hardware, that is) ASIO is useful since it allows monitoring the tracks you're recording. My setup depends on assigning I/O to hardware buses so the limitations of WDM aren't so apparent.
 
would cool edit pro recognize new interfaces ?
Or i guess as long as you have drivers installed its ok...
 
Hi again Tojo....dude, you're getting around!....and good on you!

just my own observations with this....

I've never had much luck with firewire and CEP/AA......sure, the program will 'see' the firewire....and sure, you may get it to work nicely, as others have.
Trouble is that there are soooo many f/w interfaces out there, with differing chipsets that can create havoc on certain systems and work wonderfully on others.

Others here will have the time to explain that aspect in greater detail, for sure.

I'll stick to my rock solid Delta's on the AA1.5 platform.....,,(never an issue, they just let's me record.)
