Firewire Interface and ExpressCard Firewire...

I've created some topics on what USB interface to go with but changed my mind. I want to go with some high quality firewire. I use a laptop and just found the express port which I never knew existed (I ripped apart my laptop to find that a plastic insert was in it).

So the plan is to plug this baby in:

And then get a firewire interface, except I don't know what to go with. Running vista 64, only doing one track at a time (possibly a few more in the future).

If anyone knows about these express cards to firewire, please inform me because I'm not sure about the one above. I just found that in a quick search. So I think I provided all the info, thanks in advance.
 
Once you find which interface you want, check on their website to see if they recommend any firewire expresscards. I know that Presonus lists a couple that they've tested with their interfaces.
 
Both Belkin and SIIG make expresscard firewire cards with Texas Instruments chips.

For audio and video, TI firewire chips are the ONLY ones you want to use (many pro audio interfaces will ONLY work reliably with TI chipsets.... most of the posts you see screaming 'firewire dont work' are from people using VIA or other cheap non-spec firewire chipsets.)

newegg.com has them at reasonable prices... but ALWAYS look up the manufacturers specs to make sure they have TI chipsets.
 
Well, looks like I'm going to be ordering it in a few minutes... I hope it's the right stuff.
 
hi guys i too am having firewire probs i have laptop and focusrite pro24dsp i am getting an express card but till then i was hoping to use the 3pin connection in my laptop witrh a 6pin to 3pin firewire cable i tried this but when i record somethin it just seems to lag really bad or somethin and i cant even make out what i have recorded any ideas anyone i started a thread about this but got no replies any info would b e really appreciated cheers
 
I don't really have any suggestions, but I wanted to let you know that the "3 pin" on your laptop is actually a 4 pin firewire connection. The only difference between a 4 pin & 6 pin is that the 4 pin won't carry bus power to your external device. In other words, whatever device you have connected to the 4 pin on your laptop will have to have it's own power supply.

As far as the lag, also known as latency, try lowering your buffers in your DAW. Lowering your buffers will help with latency, but will also put more strain on your processor.
 
Oh rite the connection in my laptop is really small its about as big as mini usb on cameras i was thinking that was slowing me down or something whe you sayu in the daw you mean in the recording software im using (audacity) and i also have saffire mix control do i need to do it in there aswell or would the two be changed by changing setting in one of them

change it in saffire mix control, first...then check audacity to make sure it's the same.

cheers mate got it sorted updated the saffire mix control software that came with it and no latency issues but now i have another problem i have no sound through the headphones when i try to monitor what im recording any ideas?
I can hear what i recorded when i play it back through the pro 24 on headphones. Its just one problem after another with this bloody thing the power jack in the back of the unit is also bad the power goes off when i even slightly move the power cable
 
I don't know much about Audacity or the Focusrite Pro24. How old is the Focusrite. If the the power supply plug is loose, I would send it back to Focusrite for repair or replacement. That's all you need is to be recording that killer track and the power turn off in the middle of it.:mad:
