I was excited about purchasing this expresscard for my laptop, then I learned that it doesn't power external devices(ie my audio interface) via the firewire ports.

I'm looking for an expresscard that a), has a Texas Instruments chipset, b), can power external devices without an additional power adaptor.
Is there such a thing, or is it common for the PCIe bus in laptops to not provide power anyways?
I'm trying to make my portability as simple as possible and avoid the mess of power cords and adaptors everywhere.

do what you want but it seems to me that trying to power an interface from a laptop via bus power is asking for trouble and questionable sound... the basic problem is mic pre's especially if you want condenser mics require significant current... current that the lap top is gonna have trouble providing if ya want to do more that 2 channels at a time... YMMV...

Basically, you're not going to find it.

PC laptops dont provide enough bus power to power external devices.
You'll need a Mac laptop for that.

(Of course, Mac Intel laptops can run Windows now so you can have your cake and eat it too...)

just use something like this:

It will convert a 4 pin firewire connector to a 6 pin that gets power from a usb port

as far as I know, that cable has never actually existed. Its been on their site since at least 2003, but has always been listed as discontinued. I'm curious if such a thing would work, or if it would just fry your device.

It should providing that you dont draw more than 500 mA. But if it's vaporware, thats that.

i think the problem there with that cable is her lappy has the 4 pin so there's no voltage there to tap into..

Your missing the point, it gets power from a USB port and turns a 4 FW pin into a 6 pin powered

my bad... just a brain fart... carry on...

BTW... anyone know what the spec calls for as to amperage...
