Firewire card question

My laptop only has a 4-pin firewire port. The Tascam FW-1082 that I will be using to record requires a 6-pin. Which option would give a better performance: 1) buying a 6-pin to 4-pin cable or 2) buying a PCI firewire card (with Texas Instrument chipset)

Would there be a difference between the two? Which option would allow faster transfer speeds? The Tascam unit has its own power supply so i wouldn't need to worry about powering it with 6-pins.

Thanks

I thought the only difference between the 4 and 6 pin connections was that the 6 pin provided power as well but there wasn't anything different in transfer rates. The speed of the firewire connection (FW400/FW800) should be the only spec that matters. I think.

The pin difference is just power to the audio interface and has nothing to do with performance.

Will any 6-pin to 4-pin cable work or do i need to buy some special adapter?

Any cable will work as long as that device comes with an external power supply.
