Hi everyone. Hope I can hear some user experiences about these two products and some recommendations from the Pros.
I am looking for a portable high-quality firewire interface with built-in limiters. I will be recording audio in remote locations in India and have had problems with clipping in the past (uncontrolled unpredictable environment.) But I still want great preamps, digital conversation, etc.
I am leaning towards buying the Presonus Firestudio Tube with maybe one more external preamp/compresser running into a line-in. This way I can have 3 high quality limited channels plus 8 normal high quality channels.
However the MOTU 896mk3 has built in analog limiters on all 8 channels. The problem with the 896mk3 is mostly that it's big, has stuff I don't need, more expensive, and from what I hear the preamps/converters are SIGNIFICANTLY less quality than all 10 of the preamps on the Firestudio Tube. Anybody care to back this up or say otherwise?
Or I could buy a Focusrite Pro 40 or something cheaper with ADAT-in and a used Presonus Digimax 96K or Focusrite Octopre and then have limiters on all 8 channels and high quality preamps. This would be more expensive and less mobile then I desire though.
So, please can you give me recommendations? Is the Firestudio Tube a lot better than the 896mk3 in terms of preamp/converter quality? Can I get away with recording the non-limited Firestudio mics around -16db to prevent clipping and raise it in post? Is there another option I haven't thought of yet?
