Ok, I've narrowed it down to these 2.

Presonus Firestation
Echo Mona
Digi 002Rack

What do you think?
I'm recording rap/hip hop/r&b vocals only

If you are only doing vocals do you need all those inputs? There are cheaper solutions if you only need two inputs.

I MAY not need all of the inputs, but I heard these cards have the best pre's in them

Do you already own recording software?

I've only used the 002 (I have the table top unit, but the pres are the same) and I can say that they are indeed excellent pres and convertors. There are better, of course, but they are great for the price.

If you are seriously concidering digi products, the Focusrite pres on the Mbox are fantastic, as well. And its a lot cheaper than any of the other option you've listed.

If your main goal it to get great pres for vocals only, concider getting a basic audio interface with a S/PDIF input and sinking your money into a dedicated preamp with digital outs.

Good luck!
Chris

I should also add that I never really thought I'd use all the I/O on the 002, but last weekend I had to opportunity to record a band live- and I *really* appreciated all the I/O!!!

And I recently had the good fortune to borrow a medium format console and again, I really appreciated all the I/O. 16 outs (8 via ADAT) can do a pretty good job of getting a project out to the analog board for some really fun mixing.

You never know when you'll need/want it- and if you don't have it, you don't have it.

I didn't put a whole lot of thought into the MBox, because sho many people have given me so many stories about it.

My question about the MBox would be, whats the deal with the clicking noise some guy experienced?
Will I get that too?
What type of USB products will this not work with?
I heard it will not work with USB hubs, but whats the truth?

Because if the MBox is so great for the price, Ill be getting it.

I'm not sure about the clicks as I haven't had any problems with mine. I suspect some of this comes from using other USB devices at the some time and not optimzing the system for audio. I have a partially optimized system and have to disable my ethernet ports when I'm using PT, but I don't have any problems with either the mbox or the 002.

I am sure that it WON'T work through a USB hub. Neither will most other USB audio interfaces. With USB audio, its best to have NO other USB devices using the bus so that the audio can use the full bandwidth.

Head over the www.digidesign.com and take a CLOSE look at the compatibilty requirements for both the 002 and the mbox and see if your system meets them. Digi is very honest and specific about which systems work with their products and which don't. If yours doesn't then I'd look elsewhere. If it does, then it should work just fine.

And get some opinions on the other devices, as well. I only know about Digi stuff and a few other things I've used that aren't on your list. I'm giving you a very onesided perspective.

Take care,
Chris

So...

....what did you end up getting? I've had great luck with the Firestation, but I have heard of people having difficulty, and you probably want to be armed with ASIO compliant software.
