I have been looking into getting one of these, as I have heard good things about Presonus. Is it worth spending the extra $200 for the FireStudio? I am not all that concerned with the extra routing and I/O, but I am concerned with preamp quality and A/D converters. Are the preamps in the Firestudio that much better to justify $200?

Also, is there another product that anyone would recommend over Presonus that has at least 8 inputs and quality mic pre's (for around $500 or so)?

btw my laptop spec's are:

Windows XP Pro SP2
Pentium 4 3.20GHz
384 MB RAM

I will probably end up getting more memory. I was reading about some people having issues with sound quality with older machines such as mine, would that be something to be concerned about or is that issue uncommon?

I could be wrong but I read that the preamps are the same. Maybe someone who knows better will chime in.
As for the RAM issue, I would get more. Anything less that 512 is pushing it. I'm only working with 512 and I can record 10 tracks at a time with the Firepod without problems. I have yet to playback a bunch of tracks while recording 10 inputs. I imagine things will get a little dicey at that point.
Lets put it this way, you can never have too much RAM.

I often use both, not at the same time but, to me the pre's dont sound any different. The Firestudio gives me 16 more I/O which i need for some stuff
