i LIVE in the UK and wanted to buy a firepod but over here they are £500.....and in the states i can find one for $550 at bhphotovideo.com.

this works out at about £320 or something like that i think.

So I want to buy it from the states next time I can.

Is the voltage a problem even running it off the pc. Our 240V is different to your 115V?? could this be a major problem and ruin the firepod...

please help becuase saving this kind of money would be good!

If the Firepod is powered via the Firewire connection, then it can be used anywhere regardless of what your mains power is.

If not, then you'd probably be best off buying the UK version as it will come properly equiped to run off your electrical mains.

You can get a stepdown transformer to convert 230V to 115V.

That's what I use to power my wharfedale speakers I imported from the states

I screwed up my mixer by using a transformer... be careful...

(Why can't americans start using 220??? Would be so much easier! ...to Europeans)

I've now got some paperweights that used to be NiMH batteries and their charger that didn't like it when they were plugged into a stepdown transformer. Which is why I suggested getting the location specific version.

If something crummy like a battery charger can get fried I wouldn't risk something significantly more expensive.

I dunno... was working fine when I used it in US.. got to Europe, plugged in and a sudden hum appeared... and now I'm back in the States.. WITH the hum!

don't want to be blowing up £500 quids worth of audio gear! i just can't believe how much cheaper the firepod is in the states.

So does anyone think that by powering it off the PC I shouldn't have any problems?

Surely the power supply in a US PC is 115V so it will be wrong for the firepod....

maybe I should just shell out for the £500 and not risk any problems.

The Firepod must get its electrical power through one of two means.

1. IF the Firepod is powered from your PC it will work, no ifs, ands or buts. All computer power supplies ouput the same voltages whether its input is 230V or 110V. You can safely save yourself some cash and import it from the US.

2. If the Firepod device is powered from the electrical mains (whether it plugs directly into a wall socket or via a AC-DC plug adapter), then you are probably safer buying from the UK, rather than using a transformer.

I don't know which is the case, but I'm sure you can find out since you are interested in purchasing the thing.

thanks........i have realised that the firepod doesn't run off the pc......got confused becuase i'd been looking at the Edirol FA-101 which does take it's power from the pc. Looks like i'm gonna have to spend big bucks - thanks.
