I searched on this topic and didn't come up with any clear feedback. So any thoughts on this ? Would the RNP be a noticeable difference over the firepod's pres. Also how does the Speck 5.0 compare ? thanks

the firepod pres are not good. There is a big noticeable difference between them and the m-audio dmp3 and the m-audio is way cheaper than the rnp and not generally held in as high regard.

the firepod pres aren't that bad :P but they are pretty bad.

Put it this way... if you go and spend $500 on a preamp which is about the price of a new firepod... the preamp is going to sound better than the EIGHT preamps on the firepod... if you bought a $500 converter it's going to sound better than the EIGHT converters. There shouldn't be a suprise there. There shouldn't be much suprise when even a $100 preamp sounds better than the firepod pres (which most don't). Yes the RNP will sound better but the firepod pres are fine.

I made some quickie drum clips using a Firepod recently:

The Firepod is a great bang for the buck, the RNP (my partner sold the RNP so we don't still have it around to do any direct comparisons) as a standalone preamp would be a step up in a different direction as far as kind of scooped sounding (I preferred the RNP as a bass D.I.) and the Firepod pres don't possess a totally "transparent" character but they don't seem to impart much of their own sound on the source either.

The Speck 5.0 is another step up from both of those entirely, big, open, detailed, on the clean side of things but the cool thing is that output transformer which can be switched in and out. It puts a subtle sheen which adds nice vibe on vocals in particular. The D.I. on the Speck is also quite good. Definitely the most all purpose of the 3 as well.

Not much more than a case of the "get what ya pay fors"! On the features side of things, they're comparing apples with oranges with tangerines.
