I was thinking of getting a Firepod
and a nice Behringer mixer

I was wondering if I could get each track from the mixer into the prosonus. So, record like 8 seperate tracks simultaneously. I believe there was a write up on this sort of thing, but I'm having trouble finding it. These two things will be the basis of my home set up - running them into my Adobe Audition. Thanks for any help.

why would anyone want to do this?!

the firepod already has 8 decent preamp with phantom power.

I would skip the mixer and just get the firepod. From what I hear, the firepod pre's are pretty decent.

Yeah, I think I'll just go with the firepod...if I'm just using the firepod and good mics with adobe audition, do you think that's all I'll really need, oh and a headphone amp.

Thanks.

Yep plus a pair of decent monitors that's about all you need

So, if I was using these aforementioned things for my DAW and wanted to record other bands, is this a practical set up? I mean, sure down the road I'll get an external mixing console for Audition, but as far as compressors and EQs, couldn't I just rely on plug-ins? People with other DAW setups have all the external stuff, I'm just wondering why? Thanks,

if the external hardware sounds better and/or is easier for you to work with then it makes sense to hardware over software. if you're gonna buy cheap hardware though, you might as well use software instead.

Lots of people use hardware that they've had for years. Recently, software emulation of real hardware has got a lot better. That's why units like the Firepod are becoming more popular. They're packed with decent pres and A/D/A converters and that's it, so they're mobile. All the EQ, delay, compression, effects etc. can be applied in software at mixdown

What's an 800r? And I was thinking about getting a control surface, what would you guys recommend for a control surface for cheap...less than 300 preferably?

He´s talking about Mackie´s Onyx 800r... A Eight-Channel Microphone Preamp w/192kHz Digital Output...
Check it out...

If u decide to go with the onyx, remember that is not a sound card (just like the firepod) but a pre with digital output... So, you still need a sound card for your DAW...

BTW, the only control surface i can think for 300 bucks, is the behringer
bcf2000...

I don't need a soundcard with my Firepod. Elaborate?

The Firepod IS a soundcard, an external one. The preamps amplify the mic signals, the AD convertors change the signal to a digital datastream which is fed to the computer via firewire where it gets input into your sequencing s/w. The output from the sequencing s/w is returned in a digital datastream to the Firepod via firewire where the DA convertors change it back to an analog signal and route it to the outputs, headphones etc. for your aural pleasure

Oh you don't need an internal soundcard with your firepod really because it's a firewire interface, so you just need firewire. And then with the onyx, an internal soundcard is needed because it uses a "joystick" cable, right, Bulls Hit? It looks like that cable, anyway.

About the controller...would you recommend it?

If you're talking about the Mackie mixer with the firewire bolt-on, then no you don't need a soundcard with that either. Firewire=digital which means the AD conversion has already been done, so a soundcard is superfluous

You're talking about the Control surface? Behringer gear has got a pretty low quality threshold. That unit won't add anything to the quality of your production. If it was me I'd put the 200 bills toward a nice mic or some good monitors

The most important thing IMO is the preamp. The mackie is a great unit for the price. That gives you 8 inputs with channel 1 and 2 for drum overheads and 7 and 8 can also be used as hi z inputs for bass or giutars. And it all connects with 1 cable. Much better than the presonus. Use a mouse and keyboard for now and get used to the software than get a control surface. If you do it right the first time, this equipment will last and have a decent resale value. Good luck. You can hear the mackie unit tracking my drums here..........

Yeah looks like a good unit. With the firewire option though it's nearly twice as expensive as the firepod and you've still only got 8 preamps

Thats a great LIVE board. Its got a great EQ. BUT it bypasses the EQ when recording. So if your doing just recording to say your DAW I would think about the preamp units youve been looking at. It is not a control surface either so the faders are almost usless when mixing in your DAW. peace
