how about a little help with fine tuning. I have been playing for about 13 years and learned how to setup, and fix guitars with the tone and such. However I was wondering if any of you have some tips for fine tuning. The way I was taught and grew up around guitars, fine tuning was something that never was an issue with the learning process in the instruments but as of late I am beginning to be able to hear those little imperfections within notes at various positions on the guitar neck. I know some of it is due to just being picky, but I just want to play the instrument knowing it is as tuned as can be.
Cheers.

idont know much but i know its literlly impossible to get a guitar perfectly intonated.

If your ear is that picky, you might consider getting a strobe or even virtual strobe tuner. It'll help with intonating as well.

Get a synthesizer? It won't sound like a guitar, but it'll be in tune!

Many keyboards aren't perfectly in tune either... They usually use divider chips thus creating all subsequent frequencies via division from a single source frequency (usually a crystal) thus aren't tempered like a piano.
If you have perfect pitch....you can tell.

Are guitars typically tuned to an even tempered scale? That might have something to do with why you're hearing imperfections.

From what you are saying, it appears to me that you are struggling with a guitar that is not properly intonated. While it is basically impossible to have a guitar play "perfectly" in tune down the length of the neck, it is possible with most guitars to get it close enough for most ears. Look for resources on setting the intonation, as there are undoubtedly endless articles on the net, not to mention the fact that there are some good threads on it around here if I remember correctly.
