Finding producers and getting contacts in the industry?

I have, reluctantly, come to the conclusion that I don't have the time, the means or the skill to successfully make homerecorded music that comes even close to passing itself off as professional recorded music. No matter what I do it sounds pretty murky, too much discant, too little reverb, to much bass on the drums, too little on the bass - in infinite combinations with every try I make.

So... having spent close to ten years writing songs 'in the closet' I don't really have any other options either. I don't know people in the 'biz, and more importantly I don't know how to reach them at all.

Could someone with experience offer some insights as to the approach that is most likely to be successful if you want to get the attention of producers and people that can help me with getting my recordings right.

The songs I write are some weird mix between rock 'n roll, metal and contemporary pop. It can't be as easy as just going to the nearest recording studio, handing them some money and then be done with it? :)

Oh, and I'm also in need of some studio musicians. The yellow pages? :)

With over 100 songs under my belt I still feel like miles away from going to 10 recorded songs. Please help!
