Finally mixing down my project

I recorded my first top-to-bottom project last summer in my basement, then had to send the Mackie 8-bus out. That's why I was asking silly questions about Carvins last week.

I'll find out now whether they really suck, or if it's just a matter of doing the best you can with the tools you have.

The mixer will arrive today... the compressor and effects are ready, the raw tracks sitting on two ADAT tapes... a n-tracks loaded computer waiting to master... and a Phillips CD burner just waiting to be fed. Finally I will be able to wrap this sucker up.

I'll post an mp3 in a few days when the first tracks are done. It should be interesting...

Wish me luck.

My quick two cents. Listen to a bunch of commercial CDs of bands that are in your style or that at least sound like you'd like your project to sound on the system you're mixing on before you start and every once in a while as you're going. This will get your head acclimated to your monitors and the real world. Then spark up a fatty and get nuts with the faders.

Thanks... been doing that for 6 months while I was waiting to get the equipment together. I did some rough mixes last night that were awesome. I may post a link to something next week when I have a final mastered track or two.

One thing that amazed me.. that old Carvin board rocks! Sweepable highs, mids and lows, no noise, full VU meters, and full-size knobs.. totally cool setup. Carving may be putting out crap for recording now, but that old 80's board is sweet...

I even managed to roll of the EQ so I found the missing cymbals the Mackie 24x8 had lost when I did the original rough mix after the recording session.

So far, what I have noticed is that even without compression I can get the mix a helluva lot tighter with this dinosaur than I could with the Mackie.

Today I'm going to start playing with the effects a bit. Did I mention that it also has four effects sends in addition to the eight auxs?

Should be fun.

Cheers,

What Carvin mixer are you talking about?

I found a late 1980s MX1688 in good condition on eBay for $350. Other than a line in jack that needed to be adjusted, it works beautifully.
