finally hearing new ASP8 monitors (possibly a tip for others)

Well I bought some brand new Event ASP 8s like a month ago and have forced myself to believe I "loved" them in order to justify the purchase...the truth is that deep inside I didnt notice any difference over my rokit 5s except for sheer volume and more muddy low-end...I didn't feel they helped me sort my mixes out at all....then I did an experiment...

I moved them FURTHER APART from each other!...they were about 3 feet away from each other center-to-center...and I was the other point of the triangle...plus my dual 19" flat panels were smack dab in the middle of them...so I spread everything out and something magical happened...the ASP8's flamboyently came out of the closet...with buck teeth, a yellow jacket, a thick mustach, and half of a mic stand!!! man oh man did a sweet spot emerge that I never dreamed I would hear...everything just opened right the f_ck up! now they are about 4.5-5 feet away from each other and I sit juuuust inside the third point of the triangle.

Just goes to show that often times you must use your ears rather than your eyes...my initial setup was per spec from the manual...

...I can tell that my room acoustics (or lack thereof) are playing with the sound a bit...but the Events have certainly starting talking VERY beautifully to me...in fact I might unhook one and sleep with it tonight...absolutely crazy!! :p

An interesting experiment would be to try the same distance thingy with your old rokit 5s :)

My question is where are the the flat screens now? Are they within the triangle or outside?

well I never had a problem getting a decent image with the rokits ... maybe because they don't produce as large of a sound as the ASP8s...but yes I have moved the rokits out along with the Events and they still produce a nice image ... I have them hooked up as reference monitors (and also as after-10pm monitors)...they sit atop the Events angled down towards me...the Events are on sturdy $12 barstools from Ikea (and Auralex monitor pads).

peritus...yes the flat screens now are just outside of the line that joins the monitors. I have one of those big corner desks...but I have it setup right in the middle of my room (like the tip of an arrow pointing at the wall) so the flat screens are on the tip of the desk; just outside of the triangle. The flat screens also now have about a foot of space between them as well...

I was always concerned with the computer-monitors interfering with image...and from the research I have done, it looks like they will always somehow affect on the sound...being that they are big physical objects with their own reflective properties...I guess the trick is minimizing that effect by adjusting your setup (move the flat screens around, mount the speakers higher up, etc.)

My next question, and maybe not all that related to your original post is:

Do you hear any noise coming from your flat screens (maybe just a lil)?

I'm asking because I'd like to think that there is a way to get my room dead silent (save the music). Currently I'm running dual CRT monitors and the sound from them becomes absolutely unbearable after awhile. This is a recent development due to the fact that last week I moved my case into a separate room and ran the cables through the wall (aka EVERYTHING AUDIBLE IS WELL... audible again..)..

On the other hand, having old-style (curved) CRT's (not the flat glass models) may give me the advantage of deflection of high frequencies (so... oh well I guess)...

haha...Excuse the ramble please... :p

peritus, not a peep from the flat screens...but I also have two PCs running when they are on...the PCs do make a bit of noise.

I have never heard of a noisy flat screen monitor...but then again I haven't turned one on in an extremely quiet environment...

Right on.. Thanks man! :)

I have the ASP8s in a 11x12 room and bass traps are required. The detail and accuracy increased dramatically after putting up just 4 traps. The sweetspot is also large. Keep them about 2 feet from the back wall and you will get the most out of them.

Same story here with me only I went from KrK Kroks to Event ASP8 and at first listen I had them about 3 feet from me on the console and they sounded like crap. I played around a little bit and settled on 5ft equilateral triangle, sideways on the stands and slightly above ear level. The reason I went sideways is my stands put the monitors halfway betwen ceiling and floor, worst place to be.

The Events are tricky to position right, but once dialed in they sound fantastic. I did some tests with Ethan Winers test cd and things are pretty flat with very little treatment.
The imaging is great and the sound is full range and smooth.

Bottom line is Event should market these as more of a midfield monitor because that is where they sound best.

I auditioned a lot of monitors, in my room when possible, before settling on the ASP8s and I have had them for a year now and they have been great to mix on.
Just my 2 cents!

CRTs are not for control rooms. Oh the noise! Throw those fuckers out and save your nickels for an LCD.
