and its phat. low hours, 30 ips, awesome. runs great. I have a couple questions.

1. my mixer's specs say with all channels on and at unity and master at unity, the noise level is -64 dBu for a 68 dB S/N. the THD is measured at <= .1% at +14 dBu. So I assume that +14 dBu is the upper headroom limit.

the E-22's S/N ratio at 30 ips is 74dB WTD, 68 dB UNWTD, with max input gain of +24 dBm.

On first glance, it looks like I should run my tape machine +10db hotter than my mixer in order to match the headroom of both units. But I'm not exactly sure how to compare dBu and dBm and if this line of thinking works even if they are the same.

2. How do you measure voltage on a balanced cable if your voltmeter only has 2 leads? do you simply take the + and the ground and double the reading?

thanks.....

for the voltage thing, I have had to simply choose one of the leads. Thing is, there's no real reason to try and measure both, because you can't alter one with out the other. In my expirience, the 2 conductors are always slightly off, by say a milivolt or two, but makes no real diff. So I would go ahead and pick either the + or the - for the + lead, and ground for the - lead. And no, you don't have to double anything, the measurement you get initially is the the correct one. So if you test the hot wire and ground and get 1.4 volts, the balanced lines cables voltage is 1.4 volts.

And if I'm incorrect, I've made so very VERY large mistakes calibrating my Otari! :D
