I periodically try to see where my "ears" are at... by hearing a little piece I like, and trying by memory only, to replicate it on piano and whatnot on the computer.
the result is never anything like the original, and i would usually give up and turn it into something myself.
this time, It went differently. The old lady finally got done with her new promotion and project, and came out for the long weekend. I had bought her a iced tea maker she asked for, and picked up 2 DVD's out of the bargain pile on the way out.
the one CD, we watched a good bit of it, and it was in 10 parts serial format, and between every part, you heard the "theme music". I was falling asleep idly thinking I could "do it". Fell asleep, and she replayed the whole CD again to see parts she slept thru. Then when we both woke up, the theme music was playing over and pver again like a CD does when its over and waiting for you.
I listened for a couple miutes, and lit a smoke. shut the DVD off and went over to my composition software. fiddled around for a minute or two, and thought I was close. cut and pasted the bit up and down, searching for "key". We finally both liked the "key". I added the "bells" in the background in a lower octave piano.
went back and played the real theme music, and my main melody was surprisingly close, and the bells were really close too, though in piano. Like, eerily close. You could definitely "tell". She was impressed, but that was nothing to how much I impressed myself... I never made anything from memory like that and nailed it that closely. went back and did the "low drone" note, and picked the correct note out immediately.
I realize to you 20 year musicians, this is "as nothing"... but to me, this was a big deal. I fancied I heard my "favoprite scale", and that I could pick out the notes and rhythm, and did it. Did the simple background on the piano too, and even without the proper instrument, you could definitely tell I did it right.
I feel 10 feet tall... (I know, it doesnt take much to impress me... lol)
I THOUGHT driving around the cab all day, listening to the classical station, I was fancying I could fathom a lot of the simpler melodies and easier backgrounds, scale and note wise... but I wasn't sure till now...
I cant hear the scale and notes, like Geck can do... but I can hear the intervals when its in my favorite scale. I am starting to say along with chord changes: "okay... v... iv... root..."
my ears are coming along nicely and tuning themselves, of their own accord?
