"song1.mp3" 2.92MB

How's everyone doing? It's been a long time since I've posted anything up here. Been rather busy; and for some reason my ISP doesn't seem to like mp3.com. I can't download anything from there. So I can't download any mp3s that you guys post there :(

I could use your opinions on this one. This is just a rough mix.

There is one part that I'm mainly concerned with at the moment:

At 2:34 it goes from the main part to a solo. The tonality of the 2 parts is quite different. What do you guys think? Is it OK? or is it cheesey? I was thinking about adding in another distorted guitar in the background of the solo so that the two parts don't contrast so much, but I like the way the rhythm guitar sounds now, and if I added another guitar it would probably take away from that. If it sounds OK, I'd like to keep it the way it is, but if not I guess I'll try adding the guitar. At first, the change was pretty abrupt, but I added some reverb and I think it's better now. What do you guys think?

Also, I'm having trouble with a title.

Any other commments are welcome.

Thanks.

Hey MrLip, good to see you back. That was a nice post that Buck put up there - I am lucky enough to have "Wait" saved on my computer so I can listen to it and have a good cry whenever I want! ;)

On this new one, can't wait to hear the final mix if this is the rough mix. I liked it a lot - for some reason (and I hope this is not insulting) I got kind of a Beatles vibe from it - not that is sounds like the Beatles, I just got that vibe (it might be the vocal effects, or maybe I am just bonkers?) Anyway, I liked it a lot.

I don't think where the solo comes in is cheesy at all! I liked that change - and the solo itself rocked. I agree that adding another R. guit might take away from it.

I also dug the last vocal part, where it is subtly panning left and right.

As far as any title ideas... Hell, I can't even come up with titles for my own stuff!

Good stuff - be sure to post the final mix of this baby when it is done!

idrive sez invalid login and or password.....damn...tried several times......gibs

Brad - Thanks for your comments. I can see where you're coming from with that beatles thing. I can't think of any specific songs but I remember beatles songs having effects on the vocals. This song is quite a bit different from 'Wait'. Glad you like this one too.

gibs - try typing the password instead of copying/pasting. Once I copied and pasted it and it didn't work. What happened was that when I copied it, I accidently copied a space at the end and when you paste into the 'password' box, it thinks that the space is part of the password and gives you an 'invalid login'.

Oh by the way, I think the mp3 encoding makes the treble sound rather brittle. The distorted guitars sound a bit better on the original wav file. I guess next time I'll encode at a higher bitrate.

Mr Lip,
Took a few listens to the mp3 and here's what I would do.(feel free to completely ignore this though, this is just what I would do to it, and as i let it repeat while typing this I sorta got used to it the way it is, which is cool) Anyway, the drum machine sounds a little cheddary till the distorto' wall 'o' guitars kick in. The abrupt change is pretty cool, though I might let the crash cymbals decay a little longer to ease the transition, and during the solo it might be cool to hear some kick and crash cymb. accents. The echoed vox are cool too, but might tighten up with only one repeat. The ending could be longer, more "what is all this fors", its got a good feel to it there. The more I listen to it, the more I think that its pretty cool as-is, though it just begs for live drums! Overall good work, man.

peace.

LOGIN CHANGE

OK -- I changed this around a little bit.

The login information above is no longer correct (I tried to edit my first post but.....)

Here's the update:

In the 'visitors' box, type 'mrlippp'
Get "song1.mp3" - 2.92MB

effedupstrat - I guess that drum sound sucks, yeah? Sometimes you get so used to a patch that you can't even tell anymore. I guess I kinda liked the reverb on that snare, that's why I chose it.

First off, I really liked that snare sound you have going on there, sounds kool to me. Yeah this is some what diffrent than "Wait" ( I've let a lot of people listen to that song also). The only nit-pic thing that stands out at me is I have to listen very carefully to understand the words your singing..not all of-em just some of them.

The overall musicanship and production is very very good, nice mix too! What kind of rig are you using as far as ax and amp? Great song MrLipp!!!

Hey!!! Glad to hear some new material!! :)
I really like this song... alot!
I'm sure you'll twiddle-around until you get that "perfect" mix, but there's two things I would edit on this song.

1: Start the song at the 15 second mark. It seems a bit too long at the beginning. The average person who listens to a new song these days wants to hear some "meat and potato's" right away, or they'll tune you out in a millisecond.

2: The transition to the instrumental/lead part at 2:34 would sound better if the drums lead into it with a roll on the snare. Despite being in time, it sounds a bit choppy, or hesitant as it stands right now.

Of course, this is just my humble opinion.

Your mileage may vary... use only as directed... follow all instructions before assembling... keep out of reach of small children... professional driver on closed course. :D

Seriously though... this is an excellent song with commercial potential. You're a few tweaks away from another winner.
I agree that it's quite a contrast from "Wait", but being musically diverse is VERY respectable in "my" book.

Hey MrLip,
Tried to download . . . got an "unknown error". It might help if you change the "N" to "Y" under the "shared" column. I'll try again tomorrow.

Another VERY WELL recorded song. Your stuff is great, MrLip. And I love "Wait," and this song is equally well done.

I liked it, no problems with downloading for me, I just wish I-Drive would allow the right-click/save target on the FIRST page instead of the next.

HEY READ THIS

I just noticed the post above, saying that it would help if the "Y" were changed to "N," so I went back and checked it, sure enough, you haven't "allowed" us to have that file.

BUT: I got it anyway. Right-click/save target works even if you disallow sharing, so keep that in mind with any private stuff you may have. For this song, I guess you don't mind us having the file. But for other stuff, well, beware of I-Drive!

RIGHT CLICK on SONG1.MP3, then SAVE TARGET to listen to this tune.

FIXED IT

Kelly Holdridge - Thanks for your comments and the help with idrive.

Sorry about all the difficulties. I have changed it to a shared file now. Hopefully, there'll be no more problems.

For David and those of you who would like to know, here's my current equipment list:

SB Live! Value
SM57
ART Tube MP
POD (just recently upgraded to 2.0)
My guitar is a Fender Set Neck (as opposed to bolt-on) Telecaster with humbuckers and a TBX tone control which cost me an arm and a leg (but at the time I had lots of money so it didn't matter.) I had previously owned a Les Paul Studio and wanted to try something different. When I first switched to this guitar, I had A LOT of trouble getting used to it. But now that I've had it a few years, I like it more and more with every song I record. The more I use it, the more versatile I find it to be.

Buck - Thanks for comments #1 & #2. I'll have to think about shortening the intro. But I guess spicing up the drums would help smooth out that transition.

Does anyone find the bassline reminiscent of some other song?

Also, I think my Lenny Kravitz influence is definately apparent in this song. Does anyone think it's too much? It just kinda bugs me when my stuff sounds too derivative.

Thanks for all your comments.

Got it....great song...gotta agree with Buck62's points 1 and 2.....mix is great....very full...gibs

Got it too. Great tune, MrLip. I agree with both of Buck62's comments . . . 2) more than 1). As always, your vocals are surperb. The guits around 3:00 to 3:15 have that Scorpion sound. Can't wait to here the remix.

Question: What did you do the vocal echo in, PA9 or with hardware. Just wondering how you arranged it. It seems timed perfectly.

Regards,
PAPicker

OK. Well, I tried fiddling with that last bar before the abrupt change. I tried adding a couple different snare rolls, and some snare hits. I didn't really like the way any of them sounded. I'll keep fiddling though.

PAPicker - My delay is the Waves SuperTap delay Direct X plugin. One thing I like about it alot is that you can select to view the delay times in either milliseconds or in BEATS PER MINUTE. This makes delay time calculation alot easier. Before, I'd always have to get out my calculater which would get confusing at times.

Thanks for all your comments. I'll keep fiddling and post something when I'm done.

Cheers.

Another great one, bro.

Still like "Wait" the best (in fact I still listen to "Wait"), but I dig this one too.

I agree with Buck on #1 and #2.

I assume on #2 Buck is talking about the change up on the drums right as the solo kicks in? (the lead guitar is shredding by the way... NICE).

That's all I can think of. Keep it up, bro!

"transition.mp3"

I changed it a bit. Added a snare roll (thanks for the comments), a bass slide, and a cymbal roll.

Better? Anything that needs to be changed?

Thanks.

I enjoyed the song. Being new at downloading mp3 files and playing them this is the 1st I was succesful at listening to. I'm just curious as to what equipment your recording with.

Ahhh... I finally got it, and it's much better!
But I actually think that the snare roll at the :27 to :28 second mark of transition #2 would sound great going into that break.
Sorry to be so picky, Mr Lip. It really is a kick-ass tune, though. :)
