Before we can offer any advice we'll need some more details. For instance, what do you intend to record? If you're just doing synth and MIDI stuff you don't need the same kind of isolation and treatment you need if you will be recording a full drum kit and Marshall stacks.

As far as general guidlelines go, from your dimensions I am guessing that you will have a space that is roughly 18x10 ft, which means you probably want to have a single room for recording and mixing (unless you want 2 really small rooms). I would suggest you look around the SAE site (http://www.saecollege.de/reference_material/index.html) under the studio plans and also while there read up on studio design theory in general. All the knowledge there will be useful in helping you make the decisions you will be faced with shortly.

Let us know the details, study up, and keep asking questions. We'll help you out as much as possible. Another resource you should check into is www.johnlsayers.com.

Cheers,

Hey Thanks Mate i am already up to date on jls.com i have been a lurker for around 12 months i am goin to do two thing 1. record guitar, bass, piano vocals and the drums i will do with one of those electronic roland drum kits and 2. Soundscape music revolving around the synth and some groove boxes i have
to be honest i was more concerned about the placement of the gear itself

In that case, we probably need to see a rough sketch with fairly accurate dimensions of the space you are looking at.

In general, you want your mix position to be facing the shorter wall with your monitor speakers firing down the longer wall. For best mixing purposes you want the mix position to have symmetry between left and right (ie. any treatment you do at least as far back as where you sit while mixing must be mirror image left and right as much as possible). The area where you record your instruments needs a different type of treatment than the area where you mix, so I would point again to the SAE site and reference the bedroom studio plan for general treatment ideas.

I hope this helps.
