Can someone explain to me why after transferring my wav file of a song from my Fostex MR-8mkII to my computer, and then playing it using Windows Media Player, that the volume level of my songs is much lower than the volume level of other commercial songs I have in my media library?

I've read and re-read the destruction book for my Fostex recorder and still am in the dark as to how to "up" my mastered volume level to that of other recordings. I've also searched this site for "volume" and found that opinions as to how ignorant I am vary, but that's about it. Any ideas?

yup its because your track hasn't been mastered..you should give yourself plenty of headroom at the mixing stage then take your project one step further

there are many ways to achieve this using a combination of compression, multiband limiters, brick wall limiters, inflaters etc etc

You need a programme to upload your project into...anything basic that can take vst effects will do, then start experimenting with the above effects

Id say read up on it where you can and use sparingly as you could destroy your mix...sometimes just basic compression and the gain knob is all thats needed..try to avoid all in one packages as you'll end up just using a preset which probably wont help your track sound better and you wont learn anything either

Holy crap! I've been reading for four hours straight now! Thanks for the links and the speedy responses. Since I know no one personally who understands anything about recording I really appreciate having a place to get a question answered…no doubt not my last! Thanks again.
