final Decison

About to buy my equipment, so just gonna tell you everything il be doing with it etc and if you could tell me if itl all work that would be awesome :p

Basically gonna be recording singing with a microphone, and electro acoustic guitar plugged into a preamp (theres one in the peavey mixer) via a canon plug maybe, which would then go into the soundcard. I'l be using guitar tracks pro 3, and using drum loops for percussion.

0o ok, whats different about the yamaha to the peavey lol
 
Yamaha makes some nice stuff and it's generally recommended around here for its proformance as a budget audio mixer. Essentially they're going to do the exact same thing, but I don't trust Peavey. I would take a Yamaha over a Peavey anyday.

Nothing.

They are VERY comprable mixers.

Go with your first choice --- there are some people here who have a knee jerk reaction to the names 'Peavey' or 'Behringer', both of which do make a small percentage of shitty gear. Their individual pieces need to be considered on a case by case basis and the PV-8 mixer has been universally lauded as being a good one.

thanks for the advice there :) so now thats all sorted is everything else in order? i dont need monitors do i? i can use headphones and my current 2.1 speakers?

it looks like you will have a decent setup there. i'd just go with it and worry about monitors when you think you need them. headphones are'nt really something you want to use for mixing but they're essential for tracking. your 2.1 speakers will probably get you by until you "know" that you need some better speakers. have fun above all else.
 
lol cool, one thing umm, how do you record vocals with a microphone, without the microphone picking up the backing track that your singing over? because lol i thought that was why you use headphones :confused:

you need closed back headphones. some headphones have better isolation than others.
 
could you recommend me some closed - back headphones :) cheapish ones lol
 
no sorry ignore me, the ones i listed at the start of the thread are closed back lmao so nevermind :p

I wasn't really knocking peavey or having a knee jerk reaction. There are some professional studios near where I live that use Behringer gear. I'm just saying, given the choice between a yamaha and a peavey mixer for the same price, I'd go with the yamaha.
 
Yup. For tracking pretty much any set of closed back headphones will do alright.

Normally, I'd agree, but the Peavey has significantly better preamp specs. They're definitely the best pres I've heard in consumer gear. Slightly better than my FIREPOD, and leaves my M-Audio FW1814 in the dust. It makes me want to put my old Mackie mixer through a chipper shredder by comparison. ;)

The PV series is quite impressive, IMHO... in case you didn't get that.
