Is there any industry standard volume (Decibals) that is used when issuing a fully mixed and mastered song? For example, should a final wav. file be peaking at - 5 decibals, 0 decibals, +5 decibals.

Any info appreciated

I don't know if there is an industry standard, and it might depend on the type of music. But most Limiters used for final mastering (like the L1, L2, L3, etc) will limit your peaks at about -.2 or -.3 (that's minus POINT 2 or minus POINT 3, not minus 2 or 3)

. What I think is more important is the AVERAGE level, and that's where you can really start an argument. I like my tunes to average about -12db. Others go for more or less. But I find at -12db, my tunes don't have to be turned up in a CD player to compete with other CD's....Yet, they're not squashed so much as to lose any and all dynamics.

Let the shit-flinging begin!!!

Okay thanks for your help RAMI - It was actually the average volume i was concerned about so thanks. I just didn't express myself to well.
