Can someone make some sense of these terms for me?

What do they do and when are they used?

A high-pass filter does as the name implies: it filters out other frequencies and only lets the HIGH frequencies PASS through.

You can probably deduce from that what a low pass filter does.

They are used kind of like equalizers are...to either take out or emphasize certain frequencies. I'm sure someone else can go a little more into detail, but that's the jist.
