Greetings,

I have always wanted to make tracks for video games and film scores. How would one go about getting into these genres? What kind of credentials would one need?

You just need some demos and have to get them in front of the people who make the decisions on what music to use. A good way to start would be to offer your music for free to some free mod developers. A big game mod can get a lot of industry attention.

The same goes for movies. Find low budget and student film makers who need music. Once you have a good resume and reel you may be able to start getting paid.

I've never done game music - but I have done music for a few low budget films (for free - just to develop some chops and get my name out there). That led to some songs being used in a couple of direct to video films and a network TV show (which generate some modest income).

At one point, a director (who had purchased the rights to a stage play) was planning a big budget "major studio" film. He heard my music (which was used in a stage production of the play he planned to develop into a film). He seemed sincere that he wanted to use at least some of my material (obviously there would have be music supervisors, etc. involved).

Well, Trimark, Sony and a couple of other studios got into a bidding war, the director started making damands (artistic freedom and all that artsy B.S.) - and the whole thing fell apart.

Sad ending - but the point is, if you are serious - do your reaserch and get your music out there to anyone who can remotely be a resource - cause you never know who may hear it (naturally - that is all based on the assumption that you've got the chops).
